Bunker Hill

Bunker is our neighborhood school. The scores aren't that great and I have reservations. New principal seems great. If your kids go there, can you please share your experience?

If the principal is good that will make a huge difference. We took a chance on our IB on the same situation, and it was amazing to watch the school blossom.

You're going to have better luck on the Brookland kids facebook group. But I wouldn't lead with knocking the local neighborhood school. Just ask for experiences.

This. Show respect, the team at Bunker Hill is working hard and if your lottery number is a stinker you may not have another choice.

OP here, it makes sense, but for the record, it was never meant in a disrespectful way. I will be OK if our child goes there, but I have heard mixed reviews from a few parents, some love it, some are very concerned (for bullying).

Show respect, but list all the other local schools above it.

That's the way we do things in Ward 5 (ha).

Bunker Hill used to be a great school. It’s in a good space with a large play area. Looking for it to return to its good reputation. Decades ago, the school was packed.

OP, just give Bunker Hill a fair evaluation with an open mind. The test scores you see are now several years out of date, and may not have been a statistically significant number of test-takers anyway. I live near you (different IB school though) and ended up listing only 7 schools total. We ended up at our IB and it was quite nice for several years. There's no need to list all of the zillion schools in the area. Just your actual top choices.

I sent my kid for Pre-K 3 and had a wonderful experience. The teachers are very experienced, know how to motivate children and have good classroom management. The school is small, so everyone will know your child by name. My child entered with an IEP for speech and his teacher picked up on some other delays and the school worked hard to get her additional services. The PTO is small, but dedicated. We didn't attend this year because of covid, so I don't know much about the new principal, though I got a good feeling about her at a meet-and-greet over the summer.

I don't think you'll have any issues if you land at Bunker Hill. Aftercare spots fill quickly, though.

Thanks, are you attending next year?

BH is not our in-boundary school and we unenrolled altogether this year, so we will likely attend our IB next year.

Does Burroughs still take OOB kids? My kids are in middle school so I'm not up to date, but it seems like many Brookland parents have been pleased with Burroughs.

Rather than Bunker I’d see if you could go with Langdon ES or Burroughs ES. Those are the best public schools in Ward 5.

Yes, OOB kids are still matching at Burroughs for PK3/4, but it's no longer a sure thing--they didn't clear their PK wait lists last year.

Burroughs is Early Action, so not much hope for OOB students. I'm IB for Langdon and was wait listed for Pre-K 3.
