All Early Action tells you is that they are confident they have enough physical space for all IB kids and that downtown is willing to pay for another teacher if needed. It doesn't make OOB admits more or less likely. *If* a large number of IB kids motivates them to add a classroom, that can make it easier to get in OOB because they will need more kids to fill it. |
29 of the 33 Pre-K 3 seats at Burroughs were matched through Early Action. For some schools, EA doesn't make OOB entry harder, but at popular schools like Burroughs and Langley it definitely puts an out of boundary student at a disadvantage. |
Why? OOB kids are behind IB kids either way. Early Action causes IB kids to match rather than being waitlisted, even if the school needs to hire a teacher to accommodate them. It does not change the preference order of the lottery. |
This is right. Whether or not a school is EA, OOB kids are always behind IB kids in the lottery. For example, Brent doesn't have EA, but there's absolutely no hope of getting into Brent PK3 from OOB. And if Burroughs didn't have early action, 29 of 33 seats would still have gone to the IB kids. OP, it's worth listing Burroughs if you like it! It's true that it's harder to get in OOB than it used to be, and you probably won't match there on results day, but it looks like the wait list does move and OOB kids are still getting offers. |

Instead of hoping with Burroughs, I'd try for Langdon. I don't think it's an early action school? But I could be incorrect on that account...
I have a friend who's son goes there and she always has good things to say. If you are interested in Montessori they have that too, though that might be harder to get into. My friend's kid is in that program. |
|
But if you're inbound for Bunker Hill, Langdon is too far. Go with Burroughs or BH.
As for Langdon's montessori classroom, I don't think you can get in from OOB very easily. |
| Hi, neighbor! I have friends happy with Bunker Hill. The new playground is great. I think you might get better info on the Brookland Kids email group. |
| We had a great Prk experience at Bunker Hill. I can't speak to the staff though. It was a great small neighborhood school where can be a active volunteer if you want. Bonus we loved being able to walk, bike or bus to school. |
| Does anyone have experience with the kindergarten or first grade at Bunker Hill? It’s our IB school but we haven’t lived in DC in years so we’re pretty out of touch. |
| I wish I had better info on the school, but we use the playground most weekends and there are always people there. Swing by! |
I'd ask around on the https://groups.io/g/brookland-kids/topics group or the Brookland Kids Facebook group. |
I know that folks are trying to be helpful, but I feel like every time a Brookland question gets asked, we immediately get told to go elsewhere. The Brookland list serv is wonderful if you are looking to pick up second hand kid stuff, less helpful if you are looking for a candid opinion on schools. It might not be a 30-something page LAMB or TR thread, but even a few answers here is helpful. |
+1 My child goes to Langdon, I love the school and the admin there really care. The school is renovated and has a large outdoor space. |
PP, candidly, I think it's unlikely you would find a Bunker Hill 1st grade parent on this board. The Brookland parents here are mostly charter school parents (hence 32 pages on LAMB). DCUM in general skews heavily towards WOTP Deal feeders and charter schools. If you're worried about not getting candid feedback on the public FB group maybe ask to set up a phone call with a parent, so it's a bit more private? |
Agree. Also for those of us who do check in here now and then, we might not want to post identifying information about us or our school that could then be taken out of context. But I have happily jumped on a few calls with parents who asked questions about my kids' school on the email list. In fact, I made one good friend that way. In my view, the suggestions to try the local facebook or email list are more likely to help create community and open up candid conversations. It's not to be dismissive. FWIW I have friends who are still very happy at Bunker Hill after several year and also have friends who have left with mixed feelings. It sounds like early childhood education was great there. I'd be happy to connect you if we met at Turkey Thicket or something. This forum just doesn't work well for that. |
