| DS does well in school and is motivated. He is a 10th grader lokking to take SAT in June 2021. His plan is to simply take the free practice tests provided by Khan Academy. He's taken twice and got 1360 and 1440. He would like to get above 1500. Anyone have experience with Khan and how practice scores translate to the real thing? Thanks. |
| The tests on the Khan site are the same official practice tests also on the College Board website. Tests 5-10 were previously administered. 10 is the most recent and closest to recent tests in difficulty. |
| My son's experience was that he got similar scores to what he was scoring on the Khan practice tests. |
| My daughter did not get any SAT tutoring. She practiced herself using SAT prep books and Khan Academy. |

Khan should be pretty accurate if he is putting in his best effort, taking time to go back and check answers, etc. My son didn't like taking them on the computer and he would just rush through them so his real SAT scores was quite a bit higher than his best practice score (this is a kid with no test anxiety whatsoever). He didn't do any prep beyond three Khan practice tests and a little math review (also on Khan).
You could also try getting him the book of official practice tests - same tests, but it might be a better predictor since he'll take the real thing on paper. |
| My junior found that the Khan Academy tests were good predictors of her actual score. She used Khan Academy (lessons and practice tests) and scored in the 1500s. |
| My kid self studied with Khan and scored very well on PSAT, SAT and ACT. |
| OP...thank you all. I'm afraid DC2 will be different. Feeling i will need to splurge and lock her in a classroom with a paid instructor. |
| Please reconsider the June 2021 thing for your Sophomore: most current Juniors will be desperate to get those testing seats as rising seniors. The backlog is huge. |
I didn't even consider that. Thank you. |
DC studied summer before junior year, then took SAT and ACT in fall junior year. Scores were high enough to be done at that point, though there would have been plenty of time for another round if necessary. Pushing to test in sophomore year is unnecessarily early. |
No pushing...thats him. Idea was to get out of the way. Precalc now so he felt comfortable enough. |
| Got it. I'm assuming he's doing this, but make sure he's using Khan's personalized practice materials based on his practice test results. I know for my kid it was helpful to see places where overthinking wasn't helpful, for instance. |
Yes. My son is a Junior and he rescheduled his Aug session to Oct so that seniors could take it in Aug and Sept for ED/EA. Then the PSAT in October was also cancelled (which was a good thing in my opinion. It was not a priority). Then his Oct session got cancelled. Then the Nov session got cancelled. Finally, he was able to take it on Dec 05. He has also registered for March and June, in the faint hope that he does well on his PSAT in Jan and then has to take another SAT to prove that his score was not a fluke. Thankfully, we are able to take the financial loss of signing for multiple tests. This is horrible for those who cannot afford these exams, besides, this creates a false exam-registration hoarding situation. SAT exams have become the toilet paper of the college process. I wish CollegeBoard would allow us to donate these unused exam seats to others. They refund a piddly $10 if you ask for it. They don't even allow you to switch the fees for an AP exam etc. Remember, you can reschedule a test that was cancelled or that you could not attend to a later date without any problems. But there are no refunds. If your test was cancelled for Nov, and then you try to register for Dec, then they usually charge you late fees because the regular registration date is long past. Students were coming as far as from Delaware and Pennsylvania to take SAT in the test center in MoCo. We were registered in Frederick, Fulton and Montgomery County. It was insane. - DP |
Don’t worry about it OP. Let your kid take it when he wants to. The PP to whom you’re responding probably has a junior that jumped a bunch of seniors (who were desperate to take it) when she took it in October. |
