I didn't even consider that. Thank you.

Don’t worry about it OP. Let your kid take it when he wants to. The PP to whom you’re responding probably has a junior that jumped a bunch of seniors (who were desperate to take it) when she took it in October.

I'm the PP that mentioned this and my Junior hasn't had a PSAT or SAT yet that wasn't cancelled. We are really concerned. I'm really upset to hear that people who already took it have registered for retakes when kids who didn't get to take yet can't get a spot at all!

He didn't do any prep beyond three Khan practice tests and a little math review (also on Khan).

You could also try getting him the book of official practice tests - same tests, but it might be a better predictor since he'll take the real thing on paper.

I used the test book, not Khan. My kid did poorly on the first few tests (in the 400s), but after doing four tests did a lot better. She did six tests total from the book. In the actual test, my kid did great! She did review the math, and that was helpful, she said.

Khan doesn’t have ACT prep right?

There are spots. You have to be willing to travel and willing to reserve seats in advance and willing for test centers to be closed. If people have registered for retakes, then they will also cancel these retakes if they don't need it. Students know 3 weeks after taking the SAT whether they will need to retake or not.

As for the NMS PSAT for 11th graders, not many students reach the PSAT scores that necessitates them to take a qualifying ACT/SAT. Students who takes PSAT in Jan, will know by mid Feb that they will need to or not need to take any further "proof" SAT or not. No one who does not need the retake remains registered. We were able to register because people cancelled and spaces became available. But, yes. You do have to check the site pretty frequently and see if spaces are available.

I think that the current seniors had it tough because the pandemic took all of us by surprise. Now we all have adjusted. I like that the PSAT is in January instead of October logistically. Seniors should get the first dibs. Majority of students know that they do not have too many opportunities to retake and so people are timing it right and trying to be 'one and done'. Juniors may do better by taking it in Spring instead of Fall. This gives them more time to prep too.

Khan Academy is awesome. You do not need anything else to prep.

Khan SAT prep seemed to work fine for ACT as well--my child did it and actually did better on ACT than SAT.

OP, I'd suggest having your son wait until August, rather than June so that he has all summer to prepare. My son did the same (although cancellations made it difficult), but is now finished as he achieved a score of 1550+. He did use Khan Academy and got similar scores on those tests but primarily used old QAS to prepare which is what he found most helpful. Didn't want or use any tutoring services whatsoever.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. SAT is in the process of trying to open more test dates for next spring to help students (2021 grads and straggling 2020s) this spring. Let your kiddo test when he/she is ready - especially if top schools are looking for scores. Most will begin for 2022 students (asking for test scores) as long as things go back to normal so having student prepared will be a big help.
