How did back to school go yesterday?
Are students learning asynchronous on days not in school? How many kids are in the class - in person and home? |
Every single person on my FB feed and in the open schools group said their child had a fantastic day and came home smiling. I regret not choosing it in the summer, and then did not choose it for next semester because my child really likes her teacher and I’m not a fan of the hybrid teacher she would have had to switch too.
But it seems to be going well! |
friend son started 4th grade today they get out at 2:35, so I will find out soon.. |
In LCPS K-5, home days are all asynchronous except for a 30 minute morning meeting. There are a few exceptions to this at tiny schools that don't have enough classes to fully split them up. 6-12 will be concurrent when they go back in January. Class size varies from school to school, but I don't think any hybrid classes have more than 20 or 22 (10/11 in the classroom at a time) due to spacing. Our all-DL class has 24. |
It went fine my kids said. I’m really appreciative of their teachers who have to be there but I still wish I didn’t have to send them and honestly, it’s less instruction since the other 3 days at home are entirely asynchronous. One is 1st and the other has LD so maybe the hybrid instruction is more beneficial given that but for my own peace of mind I wish I could have kept them home and I am jealous of families who will get 4x week DL and none of the flip flopping of if we hit metrics and transition back. But again- very appreciative of what their teachers are doing. |
Why did you have to send them? My 4th grade DD is in a DL-only class and we received two new students this week who had a hybrid teacher but decided they wanted to switch to DL. The school board said they were allowing hybrid to DL switches if possible. What did you select for semester 2? |
Because I am a teacher who has to do in 5 days a week for hybrid in January. There’s not a lot of places that I could find for 5 day a week childcare and provide an environment that would be quiet and helpful enough for them to do their DL work there too (ie not group care). It felt like they would be set up to fail trying to do DL in all day care. Bringing someone into my home 5 days a week would literally have been my salary and would have increased exposure in our home. It was the best solution of some pretty crappy options. |
I actually think it’s going to go better than you think. I would have loved to switch the aforementioned 4th grader to hybrid but she would have had to switch teachers and she really likes the one she has. Still she was jealous of kids who went back this week. |
I am putting on a happy face for the kids. I think my emotions about it are complicated because as a teacher who is nervous about going in myself I think about how many them likely are nervous as well but had to go in and I feel this weird guilt because of that. Also this concern I just didn’t make the right or fair choice for my kids re: their academics. Like I compromised on their progress for my job. But I know we are all making decisions we would rather not so no point ruminating on that one I suppose. Thanks for listening! |
It was a great day for my kid! She came home happy with tales of the teacher playing kickball with the class at recess and learning how to do long division. She has 5 kids in her class. My youngest child was already back so we are used to and comfortable with the health precautions. It's going really well and the classroom teacher often shares how happy she is to be back in the classroom and how she feel she can do a better job teaching. |
Our younger kids are in private school. The teachers were nervous about going back at first. Everything is so different and scary. They now feel much better. Once they saw that the kids are good with masks and are able to social distance and that parents would keep kids home when sick, they realized it was ok. I hope you feel better about things quickly. It really is better for the kids to be in person. Thank you so much for teaching. |
Today Va is at 10% positivity and Loudoun is at 10.4% and well over 200 cases per 100,000. Does this mean this is day one of potential 5 days in a row to meet the metrics for back to virtual? |
No. The 14 day average has to get over 10% for 5 consecutive days. |
And it was 8.5 yesterday. |
Most likely to occur AFTER winter break. |
