Have you ever been a target of a Pick-up Artist?

How did you find out and what did you do?

Yes, it was very creepy. I immediately noticed his little put-downs and general lack of social skills, which is the hallmark of a PUA. They turn to PUA guidance in an attempt to understand social relationships because their innate abilities are so low. Then he started pressuring me to invite him to my apartment for various minor reasons even though we barely knew each other. He also had a creepy habit of claiming to be really similar to me in various ways (hobbies, work, etc), but I could tell he was lying because he didn't actually know anything about those things. Eventually I told him to never talk to me again and gave the front desk of my building a picture of him. He did keep his distance after that. I still think if I ever let him in my apartment he would have raped me.

He started in with the negging nonsense and I just said "yeah, you're right", walked away, and advised my friends not to talk to that weirdo.

Yea. I knew what it was right away and let it play out to see what would happen.

Ended up stringing him along for a few months and getting him to take me on a nice vacation to the Caribbean. We had sex a couple times but it wasn't that great. Broke up with him when we got back home.

He still contacts me once a year or so to say hi. I think he wants to brag about his life/exotic vacations/whatever woman he's sleeping with, but I don't really care.

I thought a pick-up artist was a person who did their best to get you to go out with them. I was approached once at 15 in a museum. I'd wandered off by myself. This man came and started complimenting me, asking me what hotel I was staying at, etc, and I had no idea what to say. My mother came up, glared and he literally scampered off. She was livid.

Yeah, it’s a thing for men who absolutely hate women but still want to sleep with them. It works on women with low self esteem.

This is what they think they are, but they use certain specific approaches that they teach each other on the internet. Such as criticizing women (yes really!), Doing magic tricks, wearing a fedora, and having a parrot. I know it sounds insane, but they are all sitting in their mothers' basements promising each other that it works.

I think even the sex with women is secondary -- primarily, they want to be able to enhance their status with other guys by being able to say they've slept with a lot of women.
