Won’t encourage holdbacks as players still have to meet the age eligibility window for U18. Don’t see girls getting held back either. If anything more start school a year or so early. Players with Jan to July bdays during BY could have been held back this whole time as u19 has always been outside the 12 month age window. This will just extend to U17. If your kid is actually good don’t worry about it. The only parents complaining are the ones losing their spot which they are replaced by a mother kid so it all equals out for the clubs bottom line. |
Yup! |

So who are rhe winners and losers when playing down?
Winners.... 1. Holdbacks 2. College coaches see more players 3. Clubs might get more commitrments. But this is negligible because players that might have been. recruited are sitting on the bench because of the play downs. Losers. 1. Correct grade players (if they wanted to play up they would have played up) 2. Parents of correct grade players. Imagine not getting any minutes at a showcase that you paid for becauae older players are playing down. 3. Rankings. How do rank games with play downs for a limited number of games during the season? 4. Everyone because playing down will be normalized and become table stakes for getting recruited. 5. Players whos parents force them to be a holdback to potentially get less cost college. This is just scratching the surface. Theres 10x more reasons why allowing play downs is a bad idea. |
Ahh no. All clubs have done is replace a paying customer for an unknown that may or may not pay. Very poor business decision. |
To win a showcase game which isnt supposed to matter. |
Nah, kids get replaced by better players all the time on the roster or starting lineup. College soccer payoff is well below the effort of the small advantage of being held back. Your fears are your anxiety not a prophecy for the a negative outcome that will not come to fruition. |
In total, the gains outweighs costs on this one for clubs, colleges and the best players. Full speed ahead for olders playing grade at showcases. |
What you dont understand is that playdowns dont pay. |
No they dont. Clubs will lose money because playdowns dont pay. |
Rubbish, there are no play downs because the oldest showcases will be grade based (senior can't play on junior team) and they all pay the club unless getting fin aid. Man, you are reaching. Take it up with the leagues and not the forum if you are looking for any results. |
The people willing to cheat to get what they want will jump ship in a heartbeat. Cheaters dont suddenly start playing by the rules. |
You funny. Playing down isn't allowed and players pay to be in the club not on a specific team. Players can get promoted or demoted at any point during the year. |
For you, it seems whoever competes against your DD is a cheater. You want grade, you don't want grade; in the end pushing for whatever protects your DD from competing seems like cheating to me. |
This is not what the rules say. In GA you pay for the year.In ECNL you pay for the year but can be moved between NL and.RL. imagine paying for the year then getting bumped midway through the season for an older player. Who is already in the club and playing for their years dues or from another club and likely shopping for a free ride. Again poor choice by the club. You make less money with holdbacks. |
Yes looking for ways to play down against younger players is cheating. |
