| We are planning to expand our Master bedroom and bath by taking a bedroom away (it is a 6th bedroom we use as an office so we don't need it). We currently have a tiny bedroom with two tiny closets and a bathroom from the 60's that desperately needs updating. My question is whether you have anything you loved or regret doing in your MBR/MBA update? We are planning to add a stackable washer/dryer as a splurge and plan to do a custom closet with shelves and drawers (but open to ideas with this). Just trying to avoid anything unnecessary and want to include good ideas in our planning. |

Love laundry next to our bedrooms and you can’t go wrong with a custom closet. Same with good lighting - sconces by headboard with wired light switches.
We didn’t remodel our master but I hate that the door to the bathroom is basically at the foot of the bed. To fix it we would need to wall off the bathroom, move the shower and vanity, and then either add a door on the original wall but over to the left, or enter through the walk in closet. Both are weird. Make sure you get a floor plan and you like the views from your sitting spots. I also wish our walk in had a window or skylight for natural light. |
| Pay attention to the small things: Are the towel racks/hooks placed easily reachable from the shower? Is there one by the sink? Think about how you will use the drawers/cabinets in the bathroom: Do you have one deep enough for your larger bottles? Is the mirror placed opposite the shower? How will you feel about that? Are there enough shelves/nooks for your shower stuff? Is there enough lighting and outlets? Etc.... |
| Against our contractors advice we didn't do the big glass shower and did an open shower instead, with a half wall. I love it. Plus there's a lot less glass to clean. |
I am seeing showers with less glass. Something to think about on this front, OP, if you are considering it. While I like the look of a partially enclosed shower, I want/need a warm shower. So the glass enclosure/or door allows for that. The only partially enclosed bath/showers I've used let cooler air in the entire time. |
Dumb, we installed a steam shower with lots of glass |
| We love our heated floor in the master bathroom. |

Are you doing a double sink or separate vanities? We decided not to do the double to have more counter space.
Safe in the master closet. Custom bench with drawers. Really plan out the closet storage and what you need. Drawers next to washer/dryer for detergent etc or a cabinet for iron or steamer?. Will you keep linens in it and how to store? Lingerie storage, shoe storage, sweater storage. How would you like it? |
| We have a walk in shower with full walls (up to the ceiling) with a small opening No door)to enter it. No glass to clean and we love that. I get cold very easily and was worried about that part but it is nice and warm the whole time. Also, we put the on/off control right inside the opening so we can turn it on before we step in. No standing under cold water waiting for it to heat. I can’t emphasize enough how much we love that feature. One of my favorite things in the entire renovation! |
Oh, yeah! We LOVE our heated tile floor in the bathroom. It's got a programmable thermostat so the floor is warm by the time we get up in the morning and warm about an hour before going to bed. |

We bought a house with a redone master. The door to the bathroom is a pocket door and this is awful as it makes a lot of noise when you close it so we wake one another up when we use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I keep seeing homes with barn doors to the bathroom and it seems like such a bad idea for the same reason.
Also, think about windows. Is there a spot for the bed that is not in front of a window? Can you put shades over all of the windows? Also, err on the side of more closet space over room. Don’t know about you, but I am rarely in my bedroom so there’s no need for multiple chairs, desks etc.. |

I agree about more closet space and less extra space. We have basically a small room-sized section of our master suite that nobody uses. The former owners had two chairs and a big tv there, but I don’t want a tv in the bedroom. So this is just wasted space I walk across to get to my closet. I guess if I did yoga I could use this open space for that.
I really, really like having a separate vanity from DH’s, and ours are on opposite sides of the bathroom, which I also really like. We have the toilet in one of those separate little spaces with a door that closes, and I’m a big fan of that. For the bathroom, our windows don’t quite give enough privacy if the blinds are partially open. Think about what might be visible from outside. |
| We're doing a similar project; like OP, we'll have room for a sitting area (can't wait to have a quiet, private space for phone calls) and a closet with dressing area and lots of storage (clothes and linens in addition to bathroom storage). If we didn't already have a 2nd floor laundry room, I'd add that. Does anyone have a coffee bar and mini-frig? Do you use it? |
That’s the stuff of my dreams, no daily cleaning of the glass and moldy hardware... give me the cold air anytime! |
| OP here - thanks for the suggestions. I have another question - what about a place to put on make up? I prefer to sit down while applying my make up - did anyone do a separate sit down vanity for make up or something else? |
