APS superintendent- Francisco Duran

Folks, is it me or is the new APS superintendent Duran spineless? He has no clear message, shows no leadership and has no urgency in opening the schools. He keeps using the word”pause” in all communications, even when no real progress has been made. He is just stringing Arlington parents along since the summer and making up super strict , non scientific metrics to keep schools closed. This guy is just so disappointing. At least, Braband is trying to use realistic metrics to open schools. Do the parents in APS have any recourse? This guy is going to keep schools closed forever in Arlington.

Remember how much the teachers hated the gym teacher? He almost lost his contract b/c he got such bad reviews from the teachers. I'm speculating that a major criteria of hiring Duran was that he would form better more collaborative relationships with the teachers. He appears to have reached a secret agreement with them, that the school board is privy too, that he won't push too hard to reopen. He views this as building trust with his staff- the students be d$#$%.

NVD- disappoints me. I would think she would care more about the learning loss, but I think she has just given up.

TT & BK are getting concerned about learning loss- but are not going to entirely stand up to him without a clear third vote.

I think he was hired to promote "equity" within APS. Such irony, his leadership (or lack of) most harmful to the student populations he champions.

I think one of NVD college aged kids has autoimmune issues. She’s talked about it before during this. That may play heavily in influencing how she views return to school.

These people will never feel or experienced or have to deal with the fallout of learning loss. It isn’t as tangible as weekly covid numbers. But schools all over the country and in our own backyard are open with higher numbers. We are failing our children.

He will pander to any to be liked. That’s all he wants. He will continue to make decisions that way. It’s truly sad.

The school board are all a waste of time. They do nothing and are generally hysterical. They love discussing equity issues because they can pass feel good things that have zero impact on education or even equity and people like you will applaud them. 😧

His communication has been very clear.

Want your kids back in school? Push the county to close the bars. Get the MAGA losers to wear masks.

I think Dr. Duran is a tremendous improvement in both leadership and communication. You don’t like the pandemic and you’re taking it out on the schools. Plain and simple.
