Curious about your preschool/daycare policy of kid having covid like symptom

Anonymous
My daycare says the following symptoms indicate kids to see health professional before coming back to school.

Only 1 symptom:
- New onset of cough ( what does that mean? Nonstop coughing or coughing a few times a day? Even healthy kid or adult cough a few times a day, and my 2 year old lately likes to fake coughing because it is fun)
- Shortness or breath

Two symptoms or more:
- fever of 100.4 or higher
-chills
-shivering
-muscle pain
-sore throats
-headache
-loss of sense of taste or smell
-nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

So, running nose & sneezing are not on the lists because they are so common? I am surprised fever alone is okay.

Agree about the fever, also surprised runny nose/sneezing is not on the list.

It's such a nondescript symptom for people with allergies. It's very common when the weather starts getting cool too

Though, I'm a little surprised it's not on the second list.

Ours has the same metrics. I believe these are recommended by the state.

Our preschool is being extra cautious with the uptick. People are getting tested with two of the above-stated symptoms. So far, all tests have been negative. Parents are thankful and agree it's better to be safe than sorry.

The fever thing is weird to me too because we weren't allowed to bring a kid with a fever over 100 pre covid!

Can I ask where you are getting the tests done for your DC? I am having a hard time finding a rapid antigen test for an under-5 (if not at their current pediatrician's office).

I imagine you still can't bring a kid with a fever in, but you just can wait it out at home instead of going to the doctor.

The metrics for "what is a fever" were increased by... I think the Amer. Assoc of Pediatrics? BEFORE covid but it finally took hold. So, ,a "fever" is now 100.4 vs .100.1 which is what I've used for years as a preschool director. So it's not Covid, it's new decisions about "what is a fever."

The rest I can't speak to - we have different rules - every state has different rules it seems for when a child and teacher should be out of childcare/school.

In DC it’s exclusion for any one symptom. Out for 10 days or return with doctor’s note of alternate diagnosis OR negative COVID test.

Similar except that a runny nose or congestion is on the list in Maryland.
