| I currently have FIOS with 75Mbps. I think I need to upgrade. We stream TV, everyone is homeschooling and working, phones, video games, etc. My service is getting real spotty and I'm thinking about upgrading to a Gigabit. Anyway, I don't want to rent a router anymore. What should I be looking for in a router? |
| if your house is large, mesh. Look for a name brand company that regularly pushes firmware updates. Other than that, it's just preferences and a lot of marketing |
| Thanks. My house is 3 levels but only 1200sqft. I've read reviews on CNET and browsed Amazon but I'm a bit overwhelmed. I don't understand much of the terminology and I just want something good and that's pretty easy to set up. |

Go to Best Buy and tell them how big your place is, what kind of bandwidth you pay for with your provider, how many people are logged in and on video and any given time. They will make a recommendation.
Acus has some really good ones and so does Netgear. |
You will need a mesh network then. |
look at google - super easy. Not the most cutting edge on features, but very idiot proof |
any big box store is hit or miss as far as the person answering the question having any idea what they're talking about |
| I just bought a Gryphon brand one and I'm happy with it. Super easy to set up, has a phone app so I can manage anything connected to it and set parental controls for the kids devices. They also sell mesh extenders (I don't need it for in my house but considering one to see if I can get better coverage outside. |

I just upgrade our Verizon internet and got the newest router free.
You will need to buy WiFi extenders. WiFi isn’t great up and down different levels |
Ohhhh, I didn't know this was an option. Did they offer the free router or did you have to ask for it? I haven't called Verizon yet, but I'm going to. |
Router came free with the 1G upgrade. I think it retails for $299. You will need a Verizon tech appointment. |
I just did this all online. |
pp from above and that is very true. |
| Be careful installing mesh with a Verizon router. Either go with the Verizon extenders or research carefully which brands and products interoperate well with Verizon equipment. From personal experience the Linksys Velop mesh does not work well with Verizon. I heard that NetGear Orbi does, but not other NetGear products. |
We have Fios Gateway with Gigabit service. 3 levels and ~3700 sq ft. We needed an Eero pro with 2 beacons to distribute strong wifi throughout the house. |
