Hello all,
I have a child who attends Landon in one of the lower grades. A colleague mentioned to me today that she understood that the educational level wanes in the upper school. Is this a widespread opinion? Anyone with recent experience? Thanks |
| Definitely did not wane my opinion. While it depends to some extent which classes the student picks, upper school was challenging with fantastic teachers, based on my son's experience. His courses included advanced math and advanced Latin. |
OP here - that's great to hear! Thank you |

We have an US student at Landon now. I think it is a solid education and curriculum. It is fairly structured, meaning most students take the same classes during 9th and 10th especially, it is just a question of what level difficulty. And that is important, because the more rigorous levels seem better to me as a parent.
So there are not as many unique class subjects as you might find in some other schools. But those that are offered are good. |
| I’ve heard the opposite. “Everyone knows to wait until US because LS is lacking” |
LS is far better now than it was previously. There is a new head of the division who has made significant improvements. I moved my boys after 8th grade as the caliber of their peers -- academically -- was lacking. The school has gone through a lot of changes since the current HOS arrived (all for the better) but the admissions were lacking for many years. |
| I would look at the curriculum. We took a summer class lsat summer and the instructor was excellent and did online teaching extremely well (we'll try to do a class next summer). However, their offerings in math seemed behind MCPS so it depends on if that's important to you or not. MCPS pushes Algebra in 7/8th, not sure when they start it but it seemed more like 8th. I have no idea what the school year is like but we were really impressed with the instruction. |

New poster here.
Will they accommodate pre-calc in 9th grade? My son loves math and and is a strong student. He's currently in algebra 2 in 8th. |
We had the best experience in LS. It was not perfect (nothing is), but we loved the majority of the teachers, several of whom were fantastic teachers and role models for boys. It is a small and warm environment, and they do so many fun things with the boys. My son grew so much in his confidence and skills. |
Yes. |
| They've sent kids to Harvard. The education is not sub-par. |
Well, every school has sent kids to Harvard. Subpar is one word, no hyphen. It will take many years for Landon and the newish HOS to overcome the school's terrible reputation, which includes a lot of bad boys, tacky families, a massive cheating scandal, and an alumnus who murdered his girlfriend at college. When the new HOS started, he accepted every mediocre kid from his previous school. |
Landon is a special place. The newer HOS (already been there 5 years) has made tremendous efforts with the strategic plan. The PP is a troll trying to bring down Landon's current reputation with ancient stories. |
+1 jealous troll. |
So have BCC and Whitman. |
