| Three families we know have left the school after one year in US. |
|
My son left after 2 years in the US but not because of the quality of the education. The culture of the school skews toward a White, Republican crowd, and my son who is neither White nor Republican just felt on the periphery. He had friends and was actively involved in multiple sports, but he just wasn't the quintessential Landon boy.
The quality of the education is good, however. The school educates boys -- it's not just a holding tank for jocks. |
Thanks for the tip. Thank you as well for reminding me why I really hate DCUM. The women on this board treat each other like complete total crap. |
It's not just women, so don't assume. |
So sexist. |
The all boys schools in this area all skew that way. They have all become mostly white and republican that includes Prep and STA which both have become more conservative and clubby in recent years. On the other hand the all girls schools are becoming more diverse and more progressive. |
My son felt this way too, when touring DMV privates for HS. |
DP, but what you wrote was a little stupid, come on! It's in good fun, but saying it sent kids to Harvard was ridiculous, considering pretty much every place has sent someone to harvard at one point or another. And the subpar comment was on point. |
yes. if anything STA and Prep are worse. We have a daughter at NCS and the only Trump supporting people we know in the DMV are at STA. |
| If your boy is applying from a well-regarded K through 8 school with decent but no stellar grade and good recommendations, is it hard to get in? |
STA has become drastically conservative and clubby and yes many Trump and GOP families there. |
This is hard to apply to any particular person without knowing them. But I'd say for a well-rounded, good-natured boy with decent grades and good recommendations coming from a K-8 school (that will also most likely vouch for him and his family during the application process), that Landon is a solid "in target" option. |
There are more conservative boys in the '24 class but by no means is STA a conservative stronghold. If you had a son there you wold know this. I assume you're the same Mom talking down boys schools while trumpeting all girls schools. Give it a rest. |
I'm not PP - but '23 class also seems pretty conservative from when we toured for HS and via experience of friends whose children joined that cohort. But I guess it all depends on where you are looking from. For example, coming from the standpoint of someone at GDS (which our children are not) STA would feel FAR more different on the "conservative scale" than someone coming from Potomac or St John's (and certainly from Landon or any of the Catholic schools). When it comes down to it, all schools in DMV have a mix - but some skew more one way or the other and I don't think it's off base to say STA skews more GOP/conservative. |
Anther poster who has no children at STA. Just going on "feelings"
