Reading these threads, it's night and day on the interpretation of the issues, and changes needed for what's going on in D.C.
Even reading the responses to the death of Karon Hylton-Brown, it's like we are on two different planets. Is there any agreement on any of the solutions that are needed? We keep arguing amongst ourselves and nothing changes, just the same thing with a different name. |
I think OP is right. Two different planets. One planet is Planet Hopefully Oblivious and Apathethic. The other planet is Earth. |

Woke white people want to defund the police and clap themselves on the back for being a friend to the black person.
Black people want more police to keep their streets safe and allow their kids to get ice-cream without being shot. There is a reason why Trayon White is so popular. |
Black people also don't want police to shoot their kid who is reaching for an ice cream cone. |
| For what it's worth, Janeese Lewis George won by double digits after (helpful?) attack ads we're sent out pointing out her position on defunding the police. |
I am black. Far more worried about a black man shooting my kid than a cop. Period. Sorry it does not fit your "woke" paradigm. Please give me more police. |
| The looting and defense of looting has turned me into a quasi-republican. There is no excuse ever for ransacking an innocent small business. I’m still mad. |
The attack on my neighbors had turned me into a quasi-leftist. There is no excuse for police violence. Glad you care about Walmart. They don't care about you. |
| People don’t understand how reform works so people in both sides are woefully ignorant on the subject. |
Enlighten us o great guru of anonymous mommy boards. |

No excuse for looting or rioting.
But - police need top-to-bottom reform across the country. DC is way ahead of the curve on this and I’ve generally found MPD to be way more chill than PG, MoCo, or NoVA cops. That said, police need 100% independent oversight. No oversight by DAs who are reliant on cops. Special courts, IGs, and prosecutors to punish bad cops. I view “Defund the Police!” as a Trumpian negotiating position. We all know cops will remain. But by threatening to defund, you get the parties to compromise somewhere in the middle. Reallocate a portion of policing budget to mental health interventionist. I like it when my government bureaucrats don’t kill citizens. |
The PP said “innocent small business” not Walmart. |

I’ve spent a significant amount of time thinking about and talking with folks who come out on different sides of how to best respond to the gun violence problem in the city (so tangentially related). I think that there can be agreements on a few fronts in that space, but rather than focusing on what we can agree on, there’s a lot of focus on division.
But a few area where I can see agreement on all sides: 1. We have a problem and what we’re doing right now isn’t working. 2. We need to give the problem the weight it deserves and put a high priority (meaning $$) on addressing it. 3. There is no single simple solution. If you actually get traction on #2 and there’s more money in the budget, then it doesn’t have to be a discussion about defunding one tactic to fund another, we can start talking about holistically what are the various approaches (because just using one isn’t going to work) we should try and how do we best achieve the outcome (reducing gun violence) which we actually all want and agree on. We need to advocate to get the city to admit to #1 and commit to #2. Then have the discussion on solutions AFTER (keeping #3 in mind). Again, I’ve spent some effort on this and frankly I think we won’t even get to #1. |
Keep laughing about it until the police see you as "that type". A lot of what the police are tasked with doing today can be better done by unarmed people. Maybe never 100%, but a lot of it. |
| Some of us just want law and order. The police are out of control sadists, with no respect for black people or really anyone's civil rights, who need their budget shifted elsewhere. Yet DC also has a really serious crime problem and the answer is not more hugs. |
