Private & Independent Schools

Maret is our first choice school but I'm worried because on the much talked about (alteast on this board) WPPSI DC only scored overall 84 percentile. My DC also loved it, said the teachers were so nice at the playdate and loved the classroom, etc. Not to read into anything but when I picked DC up a teacher or administrator asked which one was my child and when I said the name, she smiled and said very sweet child. It just made me like the school even more (kidding) : ) So my question is will we have a chance or do they also only like the 90th percentile and above kids? If anyone who actually has a kid there can tell me what they think I'd appreciate it!
Thanks |
| Your child has a chance. That's a good score. Private schools want well rounded classes. They are not schools for gifted children with upper percentile cutoffs. Good luck. (P.S. I know an applicant with 99% SSAT scores who was rejected by Sidwell. Great grades. Great kid. I'm guessing there wasn't a click during the interview.) |
| Does anyone know if Maret still has parents sign something that says no tv during the week? |
| Funny! I know you are kidding, right??? |
| Les jeux sont fait. You'll find out soon. Nothing anyone says here will trump the school's decision letter. |
| Maret asked DC about our family TV viewing policies and when DC replied they seemed pleased that ours matched theirs. |
| I would love a school that had a no tv policy, at least during the week. |

This is a few years ago, but back then the AD (not the same one as now) was so fantastic she made every parent fall in love with the school. They seemed to love each child, like each parent, etc. We did get accepted, but I really believe it is the philosophy of the place to do a good job wooing. As it should be. But it may not mean they liked your child specially.
FYI, Maret was the only school to make us feel that way. All the others in the to-be-expected list had the "you're so lucky we're even interviewing you" attitude. After we got in, we were less impressed with the Maret administration and eventually chose elsewhere. |
| Thanks and thats sort of what I figured but it just felt good and like we weren't suppossed to bow down for even having our child for a visit. We actuallly didnt' get a chance for an interview at Maret because we applied to late in the process to any school. Did you DC attend Maret or you just decided that it wasn't for you? Unfortunately, I don't know anyone that attends so I can't get any real "inside" information. I just liked what I saw and when I asked DC what school he likes best, it was Maret. I liked Sidwell too but still prefer Maret.. |
applying to Maret for K. what was it about the administration that turned you off? |
| I have to agree that the admissions department at Maret was so welcoming and pleasant. HUGE contrast with Sidwell, whose admissions process turned us off towards the school as a whole. |
C'mon now. Why the gratuitous slap at another school that's not part of the discussion? This is the sort of thing that creates needless conflict on DCUM. All it takes now is one person taking offense and criticizing Maret in response, and then the whole thread will go to shit. Please don't do that to us. |
| I have 2 high schoolers at Maret. The Administration is amazingly kind and really knows my children well and truly cares about them. Maret is not a fake place - it's a school where they select nice children and they care about them. |
| Thanks 22:57. I am the OP and really hoping my DC gets in as I really got great vibes from the place. I'm sure everyone says this about their kid but mine really is a nice kid and all her Prk-K reports and her WPPSI report say that as well. It seems that they like a well rounded child. She is not 99% on the WPPSI but 84% but everything was very even (no ups and downs). I just didnt't that, "I love this school" at any of the other schools although I did apply to three in total. We are regular middle class family and I also got the feeling that labeling and such is not as prevalent as some of the other privates?! Am I wrong there? Atleast from what I observed with the older kids (comparing older Maret kids to other older private school kids). |
| Funny how everyone has different experienes with these schools. We found Maret to be the snobbiest of the bunch. My daughter applied for 7th grade and was interviewed by some snob who was about 20 years old. All she could talk about was art. Well, art is great...but surely Maret is more than about art. |
