Help diagnose my beloved dog!

She is a hound rescue on a sensitive allergy diet. Over the past month she's been vomitting bile daily. Still eating and seems happy. Her eyes are running, we've used an antibiotic cream from the doctor and it has not abated. Her stoool sample was normal and had no parasites. Any thoughts about what might be going on? She's likely about 4. Thanks!

What time of day does she barf bile and how recently has she eaten when she does it? My last rescued beagle had what my vet called The Empty Stomach Barfs, aka Bilious Vomiting Syndrome. Her stomach was too acidic and if she felt empty, she would bring up bile but her digestion was otherwise fine. We solved the problem almost completely by giving her a pepcid daily before bed, so she wouldn't wake up bilious, and feeding her more frequent smaller meals instead of two big ones. Pepcid is very safe—plain famotidine, no added other medications or flavorings. Check with your vet about dosage, but a regular pepcid, 10mg, twice a day has been fine for my dogs up to about 55 lbs.

I would guess the runny eyes are just seasonal allergens and you might try an eye wash just to rinse out the irritants. My current senior rescue hound has persistently goopy eyes that don't clear up with antibiotics but do vary with the pollen count. Worth investigating further if the eyes are irritated or the goop is green-yellow and not just runny, but I doubt that's related to the bile-barfing.

Our dog is the same. We didn't have to go the Pepcid route, we just give him a dog biscuit at bedtime and that is enough food in his stomach to get him thru till breakfast.

My hound would do this too if she went too long between meals.

Pepcid.

Another beagle owner. Also, they do need snacks throughout the day.

Definitely sounds like the empty stomach/bile vomiting. Agree that feeding an antacid will help. That’s what my vet recommended. Good luck!

Could it be eating too fast? We use a Snuffle mat, this soft feeding mat with our hound that allows her to eat her morning and late afternoon kibble over a 5 minute period versus under a minute, which she used to do and caused her to vomit. We also don’t give her any table food. Kibble and bones - that’s it. We also had terrible stools with her for months, tried chicken and rice which made it worse, tried a high fiber diet from the vet which worked for a bit then didnt, and now she’s on a grain free Salmon kibble from Costco and is finally regular. It’s been a long haul so I sympathize.

Try Pepcid first thing in the morning and try to feed her soon after getting up. Went through the same thing with my doxie mix and she eventually outgrew it.

OP, any update? Does it sound like bilious barfing could be what's going on?

Same. Pepcid for my dog when he seems to feel badly. It's very safe. He occasionally vomits some bile, but I can tell when his tummy is off....he won't eat. Pepcid helps tremendously.
