Should Northern Virginia be its own State?

I'm firmly of the belief that Northern Virginia should be its own state. No longer should we have to subsidize others in the rest of Virginia, we should be our own state once and for all.

We would probably be the best run state within the union; and envy for others throughout this great country

And gain two more seats in the United States Senate? Absofrigginlutely!!!!

We should also split up other large Blue states to further increase the ratio, too! CA, NY, NJ, MA, HI, we could add dozens more seats in the Senate, all Dem controlled.

Read the Article One Section Five of the Constitution. If we can get to a 2/3rds majority in the Senate, the Majority Leader can then start holding votes to expel members. So even though the redneck states would elect them and send them here, they’d get booted out immediately. We can put in place a permanent Democratic majority that could never, ever be challenged.

It would also mean all those broken up states would send Reps and Senators to Congress. Depending on whether these new representatives are L or R might be more of a curse than a blessing in your scheme. And with more states come more problems.

OP just doesn’t want to subsidize Republicans. As a RoVa Democrat, though, I wonder, OP, what do you think NoVa sacrifices in order to subsidize the rest of the state? What are you lacking that statehood would provide?

Right now Virginia is a blue state with two Dem Senators. If we split, Northern VA has two Dem Senators and Real VA has two Repub ones, canceling us out.

When states that are solidly Blue everywhere, like CA, NJ, MA, HI and others, are spilt up into smaller states, the net gain in the Senate is going to be insurmountable. HI, for example - 5 islands. Each becomes its own state. That alone adds 8 additional Senators. Add Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the USVI, and DC, and that’s another TWELVE Democratic seats in the Senate. And that doesn’t even count the states CA can be split into, adding at least another 8 seats. We’re talking about the potential for dozens of new Senate seats.

So the rest of VA will elect republicans? So what? With a +2/3 majority in the Senate, Dems can send them packing before they even get office furniture ordered.

I like NoVA fine. I don’t think it’s well run though, and it would be better if it was.
