soccer coach refuses to wear a mask

Anonymous
I think I am going to complain to the club, try and pull my child out of the program and get reimbursed. Soccer coach refuses to wear a mask at practice, at games, at tournaments, etc... He thinks this is all overblown. The irresponsibility is making me angry.

Is he wearing a shield instead? We had a coach that didn't understand that a shield without a mask isn't helpful...

What state are you in? in Moco, you can report him and the club.

it shouldn't matter where you are. the restrictions are imposed by clubs both because of local restrictions and- probably more importantly- because of insurers. Our club told everyone that compliance with restrictions by players coaches and parents was required to maintain the club's policy

This is an easy fix. Every reputable club in the area is taking this seriously. Put a call into the Director or the highest level person at the club that will answer a phone and have a chat with them. If they opt to allow the coach to violate their own policy then you have an interesting decision to pursue.

Does he wear one at all, like when approaching a kid and talking with them in very close proximity?

I'm a coach, and will remove my mask when I'm spaced far from a kid (15+ feet), but will mask up in closer circumstances. If he's unmasked and alone on the sidelines, it's no big deal. But yes, he should wear a mask in close communication.

Why don;t you leave him alone and let him make his own decisions. What right do you have to make him wear a mask?

If the coach is endangering a child...then every right.

But this argument could be applied to anyone doing anything at all. Under this argument I could prevent you from driving to work on the grounds that you might run a child over. I could prevent anyone from ever leaving their house on the gorunds that they might accidentally do something that causes injury to another. I could prevent anyone from ever writing software since they might introduce a bug which results in an injury. This is an argument which, if taken to its logical conclusion, would lead to the end of humanity.

Except ... we already have TONS of health and safety regulations that you're conveniently forgetting. Do you also think that seatbelt and helmet laws, traffic laws, vaccination requirements, will lead to the end of humanity? Seldom have I ever seen a better example in the wild of the slippery slope fallacy. But hey, maybe we're just all living in a computer simulation, so we shouldn't be worrying about this anyway.

Coach here -

You should probably start with your director or DOC to try and get this resolved first. They may not be aware of the issue.

There isn't a question here so not sure what you're looking for?

I would be upset considering this is a rule at our club. Report it to your club director and if they refuse to step in, then higher. If its not a rule in the club or county, then you have no recourse. but most counties you must have a mask where you are not able to socially distance and you can not socially distance in soccer the entire time no matter how hard you try.

If it is not a rule, ask for your money back and if they refuse, let them know that they do not want the bad press that comes with this- a coach training multiple kids/ teams with no mask? super spreader!

Just know that if you do that, you have burned your bridges with that club.

Why not just talk to him about your concern?

They have tried to talk to them... read the first post slowly. What does “he thinks this is overblown” and “refuses to wear a mask” mean?

I find it best to tell these people to play the game so they aren’t the reason their team is shut down.

I ordered my parents to wear masks or not come.

+1
Our coach wears it 99% of the time but when he's really far away and needs to clearly communicate something while the kids are on the field he might take it off for a sec.

Mclean boys coach never wears a mask. Im not going to name the team. Everyone there knows who it is.

OP hasn't come back and clarified. If the coach isn't close to kids, then jesus, just let the man breathe. They're likely also doing a lot of running around, and taking mask breaks when others aren't close is fine.

As long as the coach is masking when within close range to the kids, this is not a concern. If he's going very close to kids and talking/communicating with them.... it's at least basic etiquette to mask up right now.
