People hitting golf balls at Stoddert Elementary Field

Anonymous
Is it legal to hit golf balls on the playing fields at dc parks? I am not talking about putting. Ever since the pandemic started, there have been young men out on stoddert field several afternoons a week, hitting golf balls across the field like it’s their own personal driving range. It is such reckless behavior.
Assuming it is not legal, how do I make an effective complaint? Dcpr, anc, etc?

Why would this be illegal?

And why does it bother you - are you doing yoga in the park at the same time?

If you are doing something while this is going on and it is endangering you then by all means go and say something - hopefully you aren't running your dog off leash at the same time which is something I see at Stoddert all the time.

Golf is a very subtle form of white paternalistic oppression

What is the issue here? Were they not willing to share use of the field? Are they dominating it all day?

Is this a troll post?

The issue is that young white men are apparently laying claim to an entire field, keeping all others from being able to enjoy it for fear of being hit with a 100+ mph missile. The arrogance and entitlement is fitting.

Did you try asking if you could use part of the field?

Not every golf shot has to go 100 yards you know

Are they hitting real golf balls, or those training/wiffle things? Obviously hitting full swing shots with real balls is pretty dangerous. How far are the balls going?

The trolly nature of this post aside, hitting golf balls on a field in a way that prevents others from using it is not cool.

We don’t live near there, but we do live near fields that are sometimes used for conditioning by local high school teams, including golf. It’s a formal arrangement with the county.

Real golf balls, hitting them a third of the way down the field.

Complicating matters, stoddert field is on a hill, but under the hill there is the tot lot and school courtyard where kids are playing, scootering, etc. I am worried about a stray ball hitting someone in the head and causing real harm.

I will take the golfers over the dog owners that use the baseball fields as their personal dog park. Can’t tell you how many times our kids go to field a grounder in the outfield and come up with a fresh steamer cakes on their glove. And don’t even get me started about their cleats. It’s disgusting and probably a little dangerous.

Call the cops. Sounds dangerous.

Hold on...they are only hitting them a third of the way down the field? So there are two thirds available to everybody else? Not sure what the issue is.

If this is really something that happens on the regular or for a school activity, your should talk to DCPR. I bet that they would install a driving net. They have run down batting cages all over the city. A driving net would be easy.

I second the golfers of dog walkers, and I am a dog owner. I no longer trust other dog owners. They are awful and lazy people. More people are impacted by dog poop than golf balls.

Hitting full swing shots with real balls is dangerous. I'd contact DPR and DCPS and ask if this is permitted. If it's against the rules, report the issue. They can either install a driving net or else tell the guys to stop.
