Can anyone recommend a good place for a routine 20-week ultrasound? My OB group sent me to Dr. McLaren at VHC and it was disappointing. It was very fast, mostly measurements, and we found out after it was over that we had to request pictures in advance if we wanted any. (When we complained they offered to let me come back a different day.) We were surprised because we'd never heard of someone not getting pictures for their 20-week ultrasound.
I was looking for more of a bonding experience but maybe I expected too much? |
I hate Dr. McLaren's group. I had to go there for non-stress tests and fluid measurements towards the end of my pregnancy. They acted as though I were putting them out every time. And on one fluid measurement, she came up with such different numbers on three tries. I felt like she just kept trying until she got the number they were looking for and then couldn't explain the differences. I ended up going to a high risk specialist for the ultrasounds for different reasons. I hope someone can recommend someone else for you for your next one. Sorry it was such a bummer. FWIW, I don't think you were expecting too much. |
Thank you, you've made me feel better. I hope you got good quality care. |
Washington Radiology. I've been to them for all three of my pregnancies (as well as for some other unrelated health issues). They are professional, kind and generous with the pictures they gave us! |
Wow, I can't believe you're even CONTEMPLATING putting your baby at risk by making it endure an unnecessary medical procedure and exposing it to harmful sono waves. Don't you know that ultrasound hasn't even been proven totally safe for the developing fetus?! Seriously, some moms will do anything to satisfy their own selfish curiosity. You must be a first time mom that doesn't really get how special your baby inside of you is. |
She must be a first time mom because every last person with experience would agree with you?
The OBs who say that a limited number of ultrasounds by a trained person are safe must not have children either. |
This is 13:12 again. I would avoid a radiology center. I went to one of those too. It wasn't a great experience either. They don't specialize in pregnanct women. Try to find a maternal fetal medicine specialist. Dr. McClaren's office is one example (although a poor choice, in my opinion). That's where you're likely to get the best care and equipment. I don't know whether all maternal fetal medicine specialists are like this, but I actually got not just the tech, but the OB looking at the sono. It may be because its a high risk practice group. But maybe someone else here has suggestions for your next sono, whenever that is. |
I got my nuchal done at Ultrasound Associates on Seminary Rd. in Alexandria. The facility was nothing special, but the tech who did my sono was very patient (baby wouldn't get in the right position to measure the neck), explained what we were seeing & gave us lots of photos. For what it's worth, when I asked about what they do if the baby simply is not in the position needed for a given measure, she said something sort of jokingly about how it depends how late in the day it is. So you might also want to schedule for earlier in the day so no one is rushing to go home. |
I thought you were joking. You weren't. It is alarming how fast you cast judgment on this woman, when YOUR assumed facts on risk are not proven. I have full faith that the OP does in fact know how special her baby is inside her. Ease up. |
to 23:00: holy judgmental! OP said her "routine 20-week ultrasound." That is the one single ultrasound that every mother is supposed to get, regardless of beliefs, because it provides the all-important anatomical measurements. All she's asking is for advice on where to get it done. Jesus. What's wrong with you, 23:00 poster?! It's people like you who taint these boards. |
to 23:00: I suspect that any risk from the ultrasound will pale into insignificance compared to the harm of being raised by a self-righteous, judgemental hysteric.
Nothing has been proven totally safe for the developing fetus . However, the overwhelming view of the medical profession (as opposed to some of the lunatics who haunt this board) is that a limited number of ultrasounds poses no significant risk to the fetus, and the information gained can provide vital inputs to parental decision-making - and even suggest medical interventions that can safe the child's life. I hope you "get" that. |
PP, thank god there are some rational people on this listserv. Also, for you judgemental fools; How would you know if your at risk for certain complications or birth defects such as craniofacial disorders. My sister sure was glad she got that 20-week sonogram to learn that about her unborn child. idiots...... |
Sorry, I was indeed joking. I forgot about this thread and failed to come back. I was TOTALLY joking. I think I was just getting fed up with all the scare tactics and "you're a bad mommy" and "you're risking your babies life so you must be a first time mom" nonsense I had been reading, and this thread is where I let my sarcasm fly. Again, sorry! |
19:44 poster here: sorry pp. It did occur to me it might be a joke, but some of the real self-righteous posters here have already moved so far in to the realm of self-parody that the line between satire and reality has become a little blurry!
Now if you will excuse me, I have to go eat a turkey sandwich while riding on a dolphin. |
I just wish we could do a better job about ignoring posts like that. I did not know it was a joke (b/c I've seen posts like that) and the OP might not have realized it either. Bad judgment in my opinion. But I tried to get us back on track and I thought it was going to be ignored. We provide these posters a platform when we allow them to take over a post and then they win. |
