| I send my DCs to an Episcopal school and we attend an Episcopal church. At the school, I have met some people that are very anti-Episcopalian. These people are politically liberal and care about environmental issues. I do not understand why they would feel so opposed to the Episcopal church yet choose to sent their children to an Episcopal school. Their beliefs seem very much in line with the Episcopalian tradition. Asking on this forum is a shot in the dark, but I do not want to ask them directly- too intrusive. I am just genuinely trying to understand. For context, the school they attend is not Beauvoir or any of the Cathedral school and is relatively unknown. |
| What do they say that is anti Episcopalian? I was raised Church of England but attend an Episcopal Church now and daughter was baptized Episcopalian. I am curious what they say specifically and how your respond? |
| This...is not a thing. |
| I have heard conservatives criticize the Episcopal Church as being too loosely-goosey, but not liberals, unless they are opposed to all religion. |
| If you think that’s bad, try being Catholic. |
The only criticism I’ve heard is that they are so ecumenical that they basically have no beliefs. They encourage sometimes questioning God’s existence. And they basically shy away from any controversial positions other than being kind to all and believing in all. It may be laudable but I think people like a religion with a little punch to it. Maybe? Just a thought. |
This sounds good to me! Where’s a nice Episcopal church in Bethesda? |
ummm no. We do not question Gods existence. And I have never heard that from and Christian Church ive attended. |
+2 |
For the record, I’m poster above, I attend an Episcopal church regularly and my children attend a well known Episcopal private school. I was just trying to think of what kind of criticism there could be. And yes I’ve been to many Episcopal events where clergy openly questioned God’s existence. I get it. They may be too intellectual and welcoming to have a bite that draws people. |
To add, look at Catholics (which I used to be), Muslims, and the Jewish religion. If you called some Muslims or Jews on a holy day for work, guess what? They aren’t answering. Call an Episcopalian on Easter Sunday and they’ll be in the office after they can extract from brunch. |
Oh plus one million |
| Some people are anti-religion, even if the church in question is progressive/reflects their own social or political beliefs. And some people assume any Christian church must be right-wing/Evangelical, which of course is untrue. |
OP here: these people are openly rude to the school chaplain and get upset about the weekly chapels at our school. I know it's none of my business. I'm not easily offended. Just curious. |
