School redistricting (Walter Johnson)

Will the area east of 187 (Alta Vista) more likely be zoned for the new school than Wyngate?
Anonymous
No one knows yet what is likely or not. But, both neighborhoods you mention are within the Wyngate ES boundaries, and MCPS will typically keep ES boundaries intact when the rezoning for HS or MS.

Unless you're referring to the newly proposed BCC/WJ elementary school, and it doesn't have a site yet. One they settle on a site, then we can start speculating on its boundaries.

Thank you! This is very helpful!

No, I was talking about the high school that will probably be built in south Kensington.

I haven’t heard anything about building a new high school, only reopening Woodward.

There is only the reopening of Woodward. But it will be replaced by an entirely new building (in Rockville, not south Kensington):

Sorry! Yes, it’s Woodward. Would Alta Vista be zoned for Woodward?

"Woodward High School will be reopened September 2025. MCPS Division of Capital Planning will start the process of a boundary study to determine who will go to Woodward High School 18 months prior to the opening of school."

Is it going to be part of the DCC? That doesn't seem fair that WJ will continue on as closed access and Woodward would get opened up assuredly with capacity only to see a flood of kids coming from across the county bringing their problems with them.

I have an eighth grader. Is this going to affect him or will it take longer than that?

I live in AV. I am not sure why you are asking this. We don't know yet. Do I think we could be redistricted? I say 25% chance. The schools that will likely be redistricted are Garrett park Elem, Kensington parkwood, and Luxmanor. If AV gets redistricted out of Wyngate, where would we go? Wyngate will always feed into WJ. They could split us like Cabin John middle school is split but I don't think that will happen. There isn't enough demand for WJ in Ashburton and Wyngate area alone. Would I be upset and protest if I get districted to Woodward? Absolutely not. it still has the same ambitious kids going to school there and will still have diversity. It will be a good school. There are a ton of old topics if you search for Woodward in MCPS forum.

Assuming your eighth grader is a senior in 2024-25, and Woodward reopens in Fall 2025, then no, it will not affect him.
