Holy cr*p! Didn't realize that UVA costs that much for OOS.
College of Arts & Sciences - 70K McIntire and Batten - $80K. Isn't that more expensive than the top privates? Why would anyone from OOS apply to these schools and go here? Just curious. We are instate and applying to UVA this year (so not a UVA hater).. |
| Yup, it's crazy. My daughter didn't apply. Financial aid is much more generous to in-state applicants as well. |
| It is expensive for in state tuition too- compared to other flagship in state schools. |

Virginia doesn’t fund its public colleges the way other states do. OOS tuition allows the IS rate to be lower, but it’s expensive regardless.
They have a good financial aid program for low income families, but traditionally middle students wind up needing some loans. |
| OP here.. I understand the drivers behind why their tuition is high but as a buyer (OOS student's parents), is there real value in paying that kind of money to UVA? Which states send the most kids here? Are they states without good options? |
In general it isn't worth the cost difference if you have a good public option (e.g. UNC) or the net cost is no better than a good private. This is why UVA's OOS yield is actually quite low. The states that tend to send more tend to be the ones that have very expensive public schools, or not very well-regarded public options. |
Actually, they are comparable if you add in cost of living. It’s very expensive to dorm or live in an apartment at UCLA or B erkeley plus you need a car. Our DS lived off campus with four other men and walked to campus ( no car) or took bus. So while the tuition was $16,000 total ( a few thousand above UCLA’s), he really saved by living off campus and doing his own cooking. Also we kept him on our own medical insurance plan which saved another $3,000. So Look at the entire package when you compare |
| It's comparable to private tuition for OOS. Same for Michigan and I think UCLA and Berkeley. I think that's been the case for years. |
Sorry, I was t clear in the above. DS was in-state UVA and lived within walking distance of campus. It’s very doable and you don’t need a car. |
My friend who lives in MD is sending his DS there. I was surprised because his DS major is computer science and UMD have a great program. |
| My daughter by comparison and I live in MD had Binghamton offered daughter in state tuition at $9,900 a year. UVA is not much better |
It’s been this way for a loooooong time. I went there as an OOS student in the early 90s, and at that point OOS tuition was something like 3-4x in-state tuition, and it was no secret that this was to subsidize in-state rates. VA state funding for higher ed is terrible. It’s why they admit so many more OOS students than other state flagships—one-third of UVA students are OOS. UNC, UCLA/Berkeley, UT all have much lower OOS student percentages. (University of Michigan, on the other hand, is basically half-and-half.) |
