Mysiki Valentine. Sharp guy and genuine. I like where he stands on the issues that SBOE has control of like the star rating system and curriculum. I also like the idea of him having a stronger platform to push back on some of the things the mayor is doing that are really off.
Dr. Perry also seems interesting and has a deep understanding of policy. I'm staying far away from Jacque Patterson. I just don't trust the guy after listening to him. Something isn't right about his arguments. I also don't trust someone tied to big education money. Nothing really stood out to me about the other candidates. |
Agree with this assessment. |
He took down Mary Lord and that’s how we ended up with right-winger Ashley Carter. I’ll never forget that. |
That's a good point. I forgot that Jacque Patterson was part of the DFER team supporting the Trump-aligned Ashley Carter. I'm not sure how he can look at himself in the mirror. |
| Mysiki Valentine has my vote as well. |
| I disagree slightly- Valentine seems to be repeating WTU talking points and has lofty plans that go well beyond anything SBOE has authority to do (abolishing testing while it is required under federal law). Agree that Jaq is toxic. For these reasons, Dr Perry has my vote. He isn’t bought by endorsements, has policy experience, etc. |
I certainly respect a vote for Dr. Perry - I was impressed by him. I think Valentine is aligned with a lot of what the WTU is pushing for, but for his own well thought out reasons. It doesn't sound like talking points to me and I've been listening to him for a few years now. |
| Agree. Valentine or Perry are both solid choices. |
| SBOE = State Board of Education (not Elections) |
| Are there some good media summary links to read about candidates easily like they are doing for at large council members? Please share. |

I watched part of the debate last night. Agree Valentine just seemed to be parroting the WTU line. He called all charters in DC "for profit," which the moderator had to correct him on, since DC doesn't allow for-profit schools.
I think Dr. Perry probably has my vote. |
Not that I could find easily. If you want to watch the debate you can find it here- https://t.co/mVZ7JanR30?amp=1 Not as painful as the (un) Presidential debate last night, but still some cringe-worthy moments. |
| I wish there were other candidates. Valentine is for a moratorium on charters. I believe that we have to be reasonable about whether there are new schools but there are so few good by-right options where I live. My kids don't have years to wait for things to get better. |
Be careful that "good" isn't defined by the number of white kids attending. What would the school not do for your kids that your ideal school would? Be careful making assumptions Why do you think that more charter schools opening would make things better? |
