At Large Member of the State Board of Education

Still just looking for a basic primer on the candidates! I’d like to fill my ballot but don’t have patience to watch a debate.

Just read this - the candidates had a debate:

https://washingtoncitypaper.com/article/393236/dc-state-board-of-education-debate/

It was very easy to stay away from Patterson after reading it. I voted for Dr. Perry after reading the article and his website.

Were any of them in favor of reopening schools now?

Agreed. I am a one issue voter at this point.

Me too. Did this come up? And, if not, wtf were they babbling about if not this?

Yikes, Patterson is with Rocketship? Does anyone know if he was involved with them when Ward 5 Rocketship failed to open? We know families who got screwed by that fiasco.

The big issue in the debate seems to have been the Mayoral control system. The SBOE has very little power in their own right; they could agitate for schools to reopen but would not be able to do it on their own.

It's hard to tell where that spaghetti bowl of malfeasance starts and ends. Odds are that he's either personally involved or endorsed by those who were.

Patterson claims to be progressive, but was working his butt off to get Trump-aligned Ashley Macleay into the DC SBOE last cycle. He's unredeemably gross.

Patterson was fined by the Office of Campaign Finance https://www.dcboe.org/CMSPages/GetFile.aspx?guid=94dfa1e9-95b5-4266-9093-c5756e3bb573 and ANC 8B was a mess while he was treasurer and chair: https://dcauditor.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/DCA0406.pdf (more info on it at https://twitter.com/Evan_Yeats/status/1307434151289774087)

Patterson was kicked out of an ANC race because he didn't collect enough valid signatures https://afro.com/neighborhood-commissioner-kicked-off-ballot/ and then he was so mad at Mary Lord, the person who challenged his petitions, that he supported her opponent Ashley MacCleay in the last SBOE election. Whether that was because he approves of Macleay's positions or is willing to get someone with opinions he disapproves of elected to satisfy a personal vendetta barely matters--it's pretty gross.

He was directly involved in it: https://nextstopriggs.wordpress.com/2020/10/02/thoughts-on-local-candidates-for-2020-general-election/

Dr Perry is a recent arrival.

Mr Valentine is too young to have done anything yet.

You say long ties, I say baggage and a rocky history.

I agree, I would like to see Ravi as a Chancellor, or in a leadership role at OSSE, or even on staff at the Committee on Education in Council.

Valentine has been working in/around schools to know what he's talking about. Best of all, he's doing fair elections.

Have any of them stated anything intelligible about school reopening that anyone’s aware of? I may vote for nobody in this race.

I want to know this too. Even if they can't force reopening, they an agitate around it/be clear they will support the Mayor if she does it. I want that person.
