loose skin from weight loss.....or just fat?

Anonymous
I have lost 50 pounds and have about 40 more to lose. The skin on my upper arms are a bit like bat wings.....but it seems there is still fat there......and not just loose skin.

Has anyone here been through this significant weight loss and can comment on arms? Maybe it's both and as I lose more fat the skin will just stay... ?

If you still have 40 lbs to go there is probably still some fat there along with lose skin. Skin's ability to bounce back and firm up will depend on your age (younger skin is more elatic), genetics (some people have more elastin in their skin) and the rate at which you lose the weight (the faster you lose it the less time the skin has to adjust).

strength training can help the appearance of lose skin by building muscle underneath.

Congrats on the weight loss! 50 lbs in incredible!

Congrats on the weight loss achievement - that's great! Definitely incorporate strength training into your workout routine, as it will be beneficial for many reasons, including firming up loose areas, as PP mentioned.

I think that area is the first to show sag, esp if you are over 40. the skin tends to be delicate there. I dont have much fat (some) but started to get bat wings this year at age 50, after a few months off weight training due to an injury. I'm back to working out and focusing on triceps, biceps lats and overall back strength.

Thanks, all. It's probably a combo I guess.

Still.....better to lose the weight....

I did just recently start weight training. My legs are rock solid by my upper body strength leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely sore now from arm work. So I hope that means I'm making some progress.
