| Was it harder/easier? My child is in middle school and can’t tell yet what I should expect yet. Thanks. |
| Math was absolutely fine. English was a doozy- for all 3, buy especially my DS. |
| But |
+1. |
Can you say more about why English was a problem? |
| Because my kids did not learn grammar in public school. They knew some parts of speech from taking a foreign language, but nothing from English. My son actually asked one of his teachers if it was illegal to take points away for spelling errors- that never happened in public school. She was mildly amused. |
| Math seems to be fine. DD may be advanced in math, but she was at public school as well. English, and even more do social studies are a much harder adjustment. The amount of writing, and the quality of analysis expected are much higher in private. |
What public school was this?! |
| Fine. HS child is in a math class with mostly seniors because they are so far ahead of private school peers ahead. Not certain what math they will have available for the next 2 years, but will address that next year and the year after. Child is well ahead of private school peers in math. |
Usually public school kids are ahead in Math. My son started private in 9th and is in the highest math. He is with sophomores. Most of the Freshman in this class are new kids who moved from public school. |
My kid skipped ahead in math compared to public when moving to private. I think it depends on the school |
That’s pretty standard in MCPS. |
| FCPS do not teach grammar, sentence structure either. So it is pretty normal in public schools. It is a shame too because so many young people cannot write. Let's be honest if you cannot write your marketability is in the toilet. |
+2 MCPS. |
Met plenty of developers and engineers who can't write at all. This obsession with writing is misplaced and just leads to kids choosing ridiculous humanities majors in college. |
