I just got this email from DCPS...WTF? "September 21, 2020 Dear Middle School and High School Families, DC Public Schools is hosting an Empowering Males of Color (EMOC) and Reign: Empowering Young Women as Leaders virtual conference on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Students of color who are in 6th through 12th Grades are invited to attend, and you can register for free at this link. The day will consist of fun and engaging workshops, keynotes speakers, student roundtables, giveaways, and much more. We are excited to welcome award-winning author, Jason Reynolds, and activist, educator, writer, and leader, Brittany Packnett, as our guest speakers who will engage with students attending the virtual conference. Students can register here to attend this awesome experience. We hope that you will encourage your student to attend! DCPS Equity Strategy and Programming Team" |
| Seems innocuous. What about it did you find offensive? Are you also offended by the "young women as leaders" part? |
| Wow, PP. Time for you to move to the suburbs. |
|
this program sounds amazing and I'm glad they are offering it!
|
| Seriously? What is offensive, exactly? |
| Honestly, after centuries of oppression including the present day, this is the least people can do for people of color. |
It does not all student are encouraged to attend, which is what it should say. It says students of color are invited. That seems exclusive to me. So if you are an aspiring leader who is white, then it implies you are not invited. This from the Department of Equity SMH |
The event is called empowering males color - so yes, it's inviting people of color. It doesn't say white people aren't allowed. |
Sounds like you are an "all lives matter" type of person. |
| I don't see a problem |
| What is offensive about the tone? Seems like a pretty straight forward event announcement. |
|
OP this is DCUM
Everyone else do you find this offensive "Empowering White Males" then you should with the other too |
I'm glad you posted this. As a tax payer and parent of 2 DCs in DCPS, I too found the email offensive. Public schools should NOT have race-exclusive programs and events in 2020, and especially not for the school district's majority race. I clicked through to Brittany Packnett's website. Based on everything I saw and read there, I suspect her message is highly counterproductive: one of bitterness, grievance, and division. |
+1000 Programs can be focused on a specific group, but should not be exclusive. |
| That email is a great way to out the racists on here. I mean, they’re just coming around outing themselves with “all lives matter” garbage. |
