What or how do you recommend beginning weightlifting?
I’m a mid 40s, moderately cardio and flexibly fit woman, but have low muscle tone. Can barely do 10 push-ups. What beginning weightlifting or training should I follow? Assume I’m fairly uncoordinated and am not sure I’ll do the proper form with just diagrams or words. Don’t want an in person class due to Covid. I’m good with following IPhone apps though and have done Couch to 5K successfully. |
| Why not start with body weight exercises like push ups? |

I recommend getting a trainer to show you proper form.
I don’t know how you’re going to do it without joining a gym. I doubt you have all the equipment at home. Eventually you want to do Stronglifts. |

You don't really needs weights to build muscle. There are lot of body weight exercises you can do to build your strength - push ups, burpies, lunges, squats, dips, planks etc. Yoga can be great for that too.
Ideally you need to sets of hand weights, a heavy one and a light one. But you could also look at resistance bands too - those shouldn't be as hard to come by as weights. |
This. You can get really hurt if you don’t lift properly. |
| The New Rules of Lifting books plus adjustable weight dumbbells would get you started. |
+1 on a trainer or someone who really knows that they are doing to show you the ropes. I am agnostic on the gym part--you can do a lot with some free weights/resistance bands and a bench--but if you have crummy form or do not approach it correctly, especially with heavy weights, you can really hurt yourself. I had a buddy who was a Marine show me the basics. If you just want to build tone/strength, I have a book called Women's Strength Training Anatomy that is very good. Highly recommend it, especially during COVID times. |

Thanks all. Does anyone have an app, online class or a YouTube video series they would recommend?
Also, in Nova, anyone have a good trainer or in person session to recommend? |
I’m a beginner weightlifter too. I like the Peleton App which has a good library of strength training videos and live classes. There are body weight, dumbbell, yoga, and resistance bands classes. They have boot camps which combine cardio with strength. They have a introduction series for beginners (using dumbbells). |
| Try the Fitplan app or peloton has some good beginner weight lifting classes. It all depends if you want to use weight machines or free weights |
| Op here. I’d rather use free weights. Thanks. |

| For the person who posted the previous DCUM thread with all the apps, no I had not seen that (but it sounds like that OP and I want the same thing!) do that was very helpful. Thank you!!! |
Oh I am glad— those two threads had been on the page near each other for a while and I just wasn’t sure if you had noticed it. |
