How fast should I be going on 95?

Anonymous
I have a reverse commute. Every day I get on the highway, situate myself in the slow lane, and chuck my cruise control onto 5 miles over the speed limit. Naturally, everyone on my left is going much faster than five miles over the limit. Whatever, not my circus, not my monkeys.

What irks me is the constant stream of people getting up my backside in the slow lane. It never ends, day after day, right up the bumper. How flipping fast do they want me to be going? Is there some unwritten speeding etiquette I didn’t get taught in Podunk, Ohio?

Apparently the rule here is 5-10 miles over the speed limit makes you a hazard, even in the right lane. Only 15 over is still pushing it. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do.

I'm waiting for people rationalize that the reason they tailgate in the slow lane is that they need to pass slow traffic that is improperly occupying the passing lane.

I agree with you, it's crazy.

Be more specific.

What part of 95? And what part of the day?

You're fine, OP. I grew up in this area. If you are going five over IN THE FARMOST RIGHT LANE, as you explained, your tailgaters can just eat sh**.

-- someone who drove from Tysons to Woodbridge down 95 this weekend at 10 mph over in the far right lane and watched cars fly by me on the left. As you said, not my circus, not my monkeys.

Annandale was to Woodbridge, normal commuting times. Where I learned to drive 5mph over was the safe, definitely-won’t-get-pulled-over speed. I guess I’m wondering if that’s different around here. The way people here complain about speed traps, I assumed you had to stay fairly close, but now I’m wondering if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick.

I agree OP. It is tough to know. I go about 10 over. I do not think it is safe to have everyone passing you. 15 over is reckless driving if the cop feels like it. I can not afford that.

I think you're fine. People drive too fast on 95, and they compound the danger by following too close.

I think five miles over the limit in the right lane is fine. I learned the ten-percent rule: you can go up to ten percent over the limit (so, about 5-6 miles over in a 55 zone, about 6-7 in a 65 zone, etc.) and be fairly certain you won't get pulled over, and I work to maintain adequate following distance. Just because most people drive dangerously doesn't mean that you have to.

8-10 miles over or with the flow of traffic.

If I went with the flow of traffic, I’d be going 70+, I swear. I wish they’d just up the speed limit and be done with it.

yeah but then the goal post get moved, and cars will go even faster.

everyone would get to their destination faster if everyone went the same f-in speed...

I do the same: stick right and somewhere around the speed limit and maybe 5-7mph over. If people are going to be idiots that's on them, I'm not changing.

That said, I would like to get a remote controlled skunk spray pointing out of the rear of my car.

Another thing I don't get is that we're putting speed limiters on scooters in DC but not cars? These people speeding in cars are far more of a risk to us all.

Speed limits on major highways should be higher than they are.

Try 9mph over. Just to be safer. While I support you being able to drive at 5 over - it's a perfectly fine speed - we know that speed differentials cause accidents. So for your own safety, you should try maintaining an average rate of speed so no one is passing you *constantly*. You can also drive one lane over so that you are not always in the on/off lane.

Because we don't have enough crashes already? Slow but steady wins the race...
