DH and I are trying to figure out some life skills and things ds should know by the time he turns 8. Not education based. I'm talking things like
Riding a 2 wheeler Tying shoes Skipping Those are things we know he should be able to do (and he does) but I'm crowd sourcing to add to that list! TIA!! |
Laundry basics (load, detergent, shift to dryer)
Dishwasher Microwave Vacuum & sweep Basic bathroom cleaning |
My soon to be 9 year old can fix what internet issues we have. No idea what he does. |
Basic cooking
- make mac and cheese - make a sandwich - make toast How to set a table |
How to dial 911 in an emergency.
Look both ways when crossing street. Bathe or shower by himself. Make a sandwich. Feed the pets. |
Swimming
|
- How to buy something in a store
- How to give a proper apology (not the typical I'm sorry if you feel upset because you're sensitive bs) - How to cook some basic things - eggs, pasta, reheating, tea, etc. - How to give directions - school to home, etc. - How to compare prices (price per ounce) - How to be a good guest in someone's home |
Some of these are so good!
Seconding the cleaning skills, cooking skills, and the apology one. |
Op here.
Love these! Some are on our list or things he knows but we've got a great list now of things to learn. Ds was super excited to learn laundry. Less so when I told him he had to keep helping with it lol |
Navigate neighborhood without parental instruction (how to find way home) |
DS and I made up a list for turning 7:
-Swim and pass water survival (get thrown into the pool fully dressed including shoes) - Pump own swing (he was super late to this one) - Tell time - Tie shoes - ride a two wheeler - make own breakfast - set a table - do own laundry It was fun to do big air-checks everytime he accomplished one. Love the other suggestions for this coming year! |
Be approximately 1.5 to 2 years ahead in math, compared what's require per common core at that age.
Sorry ![]() |
Mac n cheese is a bit ambitious, no? Unless they are reheating?
How to put away laundry How to set/clear the table Which bus lines (or train) go past their house and where they go How to buy something in a store (and get change -- my kid has forgotten to pick up change more than once!!!) How to cross a neighborhood street at a traffic light (but at 8 I would not let my kid cross a major street -- this has more to do with drivers than it does with the child, tbh) How to pack a bag for an overnight or a couple of nights. |
This is awesome. I. Going to borrow this for my 8 and 11 year old. They want to help but I haven’t had them do much housework beyonD dusting, putting away clothes, making bed. They do like to help with cooking. |
How to read ingredient/nutrition labels and follow recipes.
How to address an envelope and write a thank you note. |
