I only have unsalted butter. Should I add salt to the mix? If so how much?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unsalted butter is the only type of butter you should be use when baking. And yes, you should add a little salt, probably 1/2 tsp.

Thanks!!

Use whatever salt the recipe calls for and don't add any extra to compensate for unsalted butter. Basically, whenever you are cooking, the recipe will assume you are using unsalted butter.

Yes, you always use unsalted butter for baking so that you can control the amount of salt. Most choc. chip cookies recipes call for about 1/2 tsp. of salt.

If you're doing the Toll House recipe, they assume you're using salted butter. I read this somewhere, don't remember where though.

If you're using a good cookbook, it likely assumes you're using unsalted butter.

Honestly, the difference btw salted & unsalted butter isn't going to make much of a difference in the typical c.c. cookie recipe.

In general, you need to be fairly precise with baking measurements, but for the recipe on the back of the bag of choc. chips, the type of butter you use really isn't going to make a noticeable difference. I've made them with salted butter if I didn't have unsalted in the house and they turn out just fine.

I've found that the most important thing in making a good chocolate chip cookie is to let the dough sit in the refrigerator for at least several hours -- preferably overnight. That presumes, of course, that you can resist eating it!

That is the only kind of butter I bake with.

My husband brought home self-rising flour instead of all-purpose yesterday and this post is the first thing I thought of! Toll House cookies turned out fine, I just skipped the baking soda and salt.

And if you really like salt, you can sprinkle some chunky sea salt on top of the cookies as they go in the oven -- so tasty.

Above all, don't neglect the salt, whether it's in your butter or you add it separately. Nothing worse than chocolate chip cookies without salt! Ick!
