If you are on DCUM a lot...

Why haven't you signed up for an account?

I have been on this site on and off (mostly on, if I'm being honest) since my son was born 5 years ago. I finally got sick of trying to remember which threads to keep track of and registered today.

It seems like almost no one has a registered account in the forums I visit. Curious as to why more people don't do it. I mean, it's still anonymous right?
Anonymous
People get mean when they can identify specific posters.
No need to help them out and leave a history.

What’s the benefit? I don’t need to track threads I comment on.

I have an account I have used for posting an AMA regarding Covid as well as answering some Covid questions. If I used that account for everything, I know some people would be able to identify me. I don't want that. And I am far too lazy to sign in and out of two accounts.

Yes. You're giving the enemy an unnecessary advantage by allowing your post history to be searched like that. For example you'd be able to click mine right now and see that I'm THAT poster from the legendary green bean casserole thread.

Meh. I’m good.

Kinda a hassle to log-in. Easier to scan and click on the various forums as needed and Recent Topics is helpful.

+2. And anonymity is why people like this site.

As others said it would be way too easy to identify someone based on pieces of identifying info posted in various topics. If you can link together info about how many kids I have and how old they are, where they go to school, my job, where I live, my exercise routine, and specific family or relationship details you can figure out who I am. It’s better to keep those things as stand alone posts.

What do you gain from an account? I value because of the anonymity.

Anonymous is a main feature of DCUM.

You keep posting with that username and we’re going to get to piece all sorts of stuff together about you.

There's also that issue of that political candidate who logged into her 'real' DCUM account and thought she was anonymous. She then proceeded to trash talk herself and people got screenshots.

I'm sure someone here remembers her name. I can't find it but it was a local politician running for some assembly or school board or something.

I can be more candid if I’m anonymous. Not mean or trolly, but I don’t have to couch my words in diplomacy and qualifiers. “DTMF” is better advice than “Maybe it’s time to seriously consider ending the relationship, which is what I would do.” I also post a lot of questions relating to my children and want to preserve their privacy (and hide my own ignorance)!
