My 6 month old started daycare last week and he’s just not sleeping there. His crap naps are starting to affect his night sleep and I worry he’s spiraling. I can’t focus on much else like work. This is not my first kid and I know this is par for the course with daycare but my first was no where near this bad so I’m stressed (and losing sleep with his night wakings myself). Any tips for managing? |
Last week? So literally a few days? Give it time and he will adjust. |
Good point. Thanks for giving me perspective. I needed that. |
Had the same problem with DD. She adjusted just fine. It did take a few weeks. Love her daycare, wouldn't change it for the world. |
Give yourself a set amount of time to think/worry/stress about it - maybe 5-15 minutes - and when the time is up, turn your focus on your work. Repeat as necessary every hour/two/three. I find that allowing myself time to have the feelings gets it out of my system and allows me to manage better so that I can focus on the things I need to do. If I'm constantly trying to push the thoughts out of my head, I end up focusing too much time and attention on them which causes more stress because it feels like not able to handle things.
If it becomes really overwhelming, I write my thoughts down. Again, give yourself a set amount of time to do this. Get it all out on paper, and when your time is up, put the paper away and get on with your day. |
OP, if you’re not opposed to meditation, it can be a helpful way to help you focus on different things at different times. And don’t worry, it gets easier. Good luck! |
Oh op I remember this! So freaking hard. I have no solution but time (or tbh we did actually switch from a center to a daycare so that my 6 month old would have at least a separate darker room to nap in because the big center room wasn’t working, but we also kind of lucked into that so not really a great solution but throwing out there in case) and just wanted to post solidarity- it’s so hard to concentrate when you know your kid isn’t getting decent sleep. It should get better with some time! |
"Spiraling"?
OP, are you being treated for PPD/PPA? It might be a good idea. |
No PPA/PPD. He’s just in an overtired cycle and it worries me. He’s in the process of dropping a nap too so that’s compounding things a bit. Thanks PPs for the suggestions and reminder that it’s an adjustment that takes time. |
