Why do mansions have so many bathrooms

Anonymous
Every super fancy house I see has like twice as many bathrooms as bedrooms. Understand the house overall is bigger but still - you'll see like 8 bedrooms and 16 baths.

Usually lots of half baths.

I've never seen a house with a 2-1 full bathroom to bedroom ratio, but it has to do with how far away from a bathroom you are. Assume you have a 10,000 square foot house and all of the bedrooms are on the second floor, are you really going to have only one powder room for 5,000 square feet of house?

We have a big house although not that big), and we're adding another bathroom on the first floor. There's one in the basement, as well, so we'll have 4 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths. One of the baths is one large Jack & Jill type situation between two guest rooms that could have been split into two separate baths, so that could easily be 6 1/2 for 4 bedrooms.

Large houses are also more likely to have a bathroom by the pool, workout room/gym, etc.

Powder rooms for guests in all wings on the main floor.

Bathrooms near the entrance to the pool/patio.

I know two families with 4 bedroom homes with 7 bathrooms.

We have a full bath for every bedroom and two powder rooms. You need to have powder rooms every so often so people don’t have to wander the house looking for a bathroom.

Lots of ways you can end up with extra bathrooms.

One full bath for every bedroom

Two full baths for the master bedroom

A full bath for a first floor room that might get turned into a bedroom in certain circumstances

A full bath attached to a workout room or an indoor pool, or at an entrance by the outdoor pool.

A full bath off the mudroom

Multiple half baths for entertaining.

Half baths for spaces that are far from others, like a basement playroom.

Half baths in spaces where you might have people working. So, if you're having your super fancy party, there's a half bath by the kitchen and butler pantry where the caterers can use it. There's one off your private office etc . . .

We actually live in a house that I don't consider a mansion, and have the same number of bathrooms as bedrooms and I wish we had one more.

Same. First floor powder room would be such an upgrade. I don’t have the money and it wouldn’t fit anyway.

My parents have a 7 bedroom house with “only” 5 full baths & 1 half bath.

My house growing up had 8 bedrooms. Each had their own bathroom(either attached or right outside). We had 2 half baths on the first floor and one full bath. In the basement, we had a full and a half. We had a half 3rd floor (other half was a terrace type space) and had a half bath up there.

Looking back it was so ridiculous. On the regular only like 5 bathrooms were used.

Mansions are huge and they have many non-bedroom areas like Gym, Swimming Pools, Wine Celler, Movie theater etc. It makes sense to have 1/2 bathrooms around all these areas so that you don't have to trudge to the bathroom in your bedroom.

Mansions usually have old rich people living in them. Bladder control is an issue.

Mansions also have large staff and it is convenient to have 1/2 bathrooms near the laundry room, butler's pantry, garage etc.

So lots of people can visit for parties, etc., without any excuse for guest to enter private areas of the home. Remember the upstairs pooper thread?

We have 6beds with 6 1/2 baths. Each Br has an attached full bath with the 1/2 bath on the main level. When you are custom building a home it’s important to have each Br attached to a fb (en-suite). If we had a 10br room home, there would likely be at least 10 full baths and a couple of half baths.

Why didn’t you put a 1/2 bath in the basement too?
