My 3 year old started to wear mask this week to attend full time daycare, and she wears it from 8am to 5:30pm. Out of 5 days this week, I found 3 days with a few drops of blood from nosebled, 1 day of soaking wet sweat, and 1 day of normal day when I take it off from her upon pickup. She is super thirsty & asks for her water bottle everytime when I pick her up. She is still learning how to put on & put off mask.
What could be the reason of a few drops of blood from nosebleed on the inside of the mask 3 days this week? I can tell it is from nose because they happen to be on the top of the mask (inside), and sometimes I see some blood from her nose. Dehydration behind masks, Mask rub on her nose, too dry behind mask. pick her nose through mask (due to itchy behind mask) ? Her masks are 100% cotton pleated mask, could that be scratchy rubbing on the nose? Too small or not roomy for her nose area? I am also suspicious of anxieties triggered by stress of wearing mask starting this week. Any clues? Normally, she does not nosebleed that happen. |
Call your doctor? Does it hurt? Can you see a scab? It could be a staph infection leaving a little but difficult to heal lesion.
My child has had a few drops of blood on masks too. For her, it's that she has picked her nose at some point and it's just some blood from inside his nose. I can see a lil blood in his nose. My family easily gets nosebleeds, something a doctor was able to see just looking inside our noses. If it continues or worries you, call your child's doc? |
Nose-picking. Make a special effort to keep her fingernails super short, and try a little vaseline in case the inside of her nose or the scab in there feels dry. She may be picking as a way to get some fresh air in there. |
If she's telling you she's thirsty, then she is dehydrated and that is frequently a cause of nose bleeds. With a mask on, she's probably not drinking as much water as she used to. Ask your daycare providers to please make sure she drinks water. In addition, you can buy saline gel and spray it into her nose AM/PM to make sure it stays moisturized.
- Mom of a child who gets frequent nosebleeds. |
Use a humidifier at home in her room and give her lots of water. Ask teacher to remind her to drink water. She is dehydrated. |
Plus one to humidifier and saline drops. |
Plus one to saline - the Ayr nasal gel can be swabbed inside the nose 2x a day and is better than the spray IMO. Also a humidifier in the bedroom, and plenty of reminders during the day to drink water.
If nosebleeds persist/ get worse, it is worth having an ENT examine the nose to see if a vessel needs to be cauterized. |
Ugh. 3 year olds should not be wearing masks all day. That is crazy. |
Not a useful comment for OP. Some daycares are requiring masks so the kids will wear them or have to leave daycare. Masks themselves are not harmful. As more useful PPs noted, the child sounds dehydrated and possibly is picking her nose or otherwise messing with her nose/the mask. OP, lots more water. She needs to be drinking AT daycare and if bet she isn't, if she's begging for water as soon as you get her after daycare. Also do get a humidifier for her room -- you want a "cool mist" humidifier, NOT a "warm mist" one. Talk with her daycare about whether kids are being given specific water breaks where activity stops and kids are told (not just asked) to drink. Push for this to happen. Young kids get busy having fun and forget to drink or to pee, so regular breaks were everyone stops to drink are important. Work with her on not touching her nose or the mask. I know--kids will touch them. But reinforce all you can. |
This is op. I am suspicious that my child feels masks uncomfortable rubbing/touching on her nose, probably she picks her nose thru mask or something ( because she does not how to take off & put them back yet). We have the humidifier on the last few days in her bedroom, and I have been trying to encourage her to drink more.
Does 3D mask ( with or without nose piece) have more nose breathing/room space compared to pleated mask? |
I'd guess dehydration, which can make a kid more prone to nosebleeds. Keep using the humidifier, rinse her nose with a saline spray daily, and make sure she's drinking plenty of water. |
