Daycare hours

Anonymous
Our preschool was previously open from 6:45 - 6 pm. It is now 8-4pm. I totally get that they need to cut costs and can only work with one shift of staff. We always had our kids there from 9-5. But the 4 pm pick up is really killing me. I have to drop off calls at 3:45 to do pick up. Is this a normal end time everywhere now.
? We’ve been told they will revisit hours in the fall but haven’t heard anything. What is everywhere else doing?

Dealing with it.

7:30-5:30

I don't know how the teachers do it. They used to do shifts and now they have half the staff who are there all day.

We've had to rely on local family to do pickup. It's not ideal because my dad has health issues. He doesn't do pick up, but my mom does, so that increases my dad's exposure because they live together.

Ours is only open for 7 hours each day.

Ours went from 630am-630pm to 7am-6pm, but they didn't make significant cuts to staffing. They adjusted their hours after getting feedback from parents on when we would drop off and pick up.

at least you have daycare. Everybody knows what is going on so getting off a call at 3:45 is nbd

Director here and we're open from 9-4:45. Yes it sucks for parents, but it's our only choice to keep from having to rotate staff or mix children. The centers I know of who are keeping full hours are either a.) in violation of the no mixing policy/ratios/ DC's 2-adults at all times rule OR b.) have enough staff (double) and few enough kids to have staff do 1/2 days so that 1/2 are working in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon.

It's tough: we have a classroom where only one child is regularly attending (an infant). So we have to have 3 staff to operate it: Two to follow the 2 adult reg and 1 to cover their breaks.

Ours used to be 7:30-6:30 and now is 8:30-5:30, which is okay for me because I’m working from home and don’t have to commute. I would not do it if pickup were before 5.

For the past few months it was 8-5, just extended to 8-6. Normal, non-COVID hours are 7-6. I agree with you that early pick up is really difficult, but what can you do?

Ours used to be 8-6 and now will be 8:15-4:15 or 8:30-4:30 (staggered drop-off/pick-up). Definitely an additional challenge, but I understand that they don't have any other good options.

8 to 5 and another in the neighborhood is limited to 3 hours in the morning vs. full time pre-COVID.

Ours is open for 8 hours instead of 10 hours, so they can comply with cleaning requirements. They don’t have the means to hire separate cleaning staff and the teachers understandably do not want to stay longer than the regular hours.

Same with ours.

Our daycare went from 7-6 to 8-5. It’s hard but we are just dealing with it. It means that I’m getting to work a little bit late or leaving a little early every day, then catching up as needed evenings and weekends. My workplace is understanding but it’a not ideal.
