Kid wearing masks cannot breathe & feel distressed

Anonymous
Is it normal for kid to feel having problem in breathing wearing masks for like 5 mins or so after? I get her some cloth mask, and I notice that she starts to breathe through nose, heavy nose breathing, and starts to playing with fingers looking down. I think she is in some distress when she has mask on. Are those symptoms normal for first time mask wearer, a phase or abnormal? Does wearing masks may cause physical or mental or health problem? She is normally a happy & active child. I make her wearing like 20 -30 min or so, all she does was sitting there still trying her best to do her breathing. I am afraid that she may faint or out of breath or something. She needs to wear masks to go back school in thevfall.

Have her wear a neck gaither or bandanna.

Face shield if you need more protection.

No child that can participate in a regular gym class without accomodations for their age is physically unable to wear a mask.

A lot of kids have an adjustment period. If the adults are calm and matter-of -fact, and consistent with the children, most kids can get used to it pretty quickly.

A child can have anxiety about wearing a mask, or another mental barrier to doing it easily. That isn't caused by the mask, though.

Do not use neck gaiter or bandana. Bandanas are not very effective and neck gaiters actually disperse the virus more. CDC just issued something saying this.

Try different masks. Just experiment. I am super sensitive to things touching my face and have asthma and have tolerated some masks much better than others. I find surgical mask with a nose clip is easiest for me.

PS: I mean, this isn't true: "Does wearing masks may cause physical or mental or health problem?"

SOme kids have mental or developmental problems that make it more challenging to wear a mask, but they are not "caused" by the mask. They were already there before the mask.

This is op, I got her the old navy kid mask because everyone say the are good for small face. I have been wondering if her behavior are considered normal, abnormal or it is the mask problem? She has problem with disposable mask, so I though cloth mask could be better. Maybe there are better mask out there, maybe I should try 1 ply which is more breathable even it is useless.

Masks do no cause physical health problems.

Your child will get used to wearing a mask and it will not bother her. It is a learning process, the same way that wearing shoes is a learning process. When a child transitions to wearing shoes when walking from mostly being barefoot, their foot feels different and they need to adjust everything from how they press their foot down to how they move their leg with additional weight. With a mask, she is learning how to breathe with something over her nose and mouth, potentially with straps around her ears that are not that comfortable.

She will learn. I have a 3yo and a 10yo. They both felt uncomfortable in the masks at first but after a week or so or wearing the masks around, they were fine. How old is your child?

Where did CDC say not to wear gaiters? Or are you just referring to that junk study?

I’d do a pulse oximeter test on her. How are her oxygen stats while wearing the mask? Some kids in China apparently collapsed during gym class while running with N95 masks on. If her oxygen stats are fine then it is psychological (anxiety/claustrophobia/ptsd?)

My kids will wear the old Navy masks but prefer the ones with stretch.

Try vistaprint

We’ve had some very good luck with vistaprint masks and they have a lot of good kid friendly patterns.

I myself have had some “bad” masks that make it harder to breathe, but there are a lot of good ones. Trial and error.
