Become a teacher in FCPS! Virtual job fair.

Anonymous
I have seen a lot of angry posts about how easy teachers have it and how so many people can step up and fill the jobs if they quit. There is still a shortage and they are having a virtual job fair. Please consider applying if you are not currently employed. They will give you information about available positions, even if you don’t have a teaching license. It’s all over their website. There is also a tremendous need for substitute teachers. Parents want schools to open and I do too as a parent and a teacher. They need to hire for all of the open positions.

Is it true they will take any warm body without even a degree and give them a special ed teaching license?

It's a provisional license and there's a little more to it than that. Even so, they aren't having an easy time filling those positions. They need to raise the pay by a lot (and I defy anyone to visit a CSS site, Enhanced Autism classroom, or ED center and say that's not justified), and also raise the qualifications. That goes for the aides, too. Otherwise, they'll keep getting a bunch of minimally qualified people who don't even make it two years.

Wait you can be a teacher—-not an aide—without a college degree?

My husband is an fcps teacher. They weren’t even able to offer their yearly step increase in pay for this year (about $1000). They will need to step up if they want to retain good teachers.

The new hires would need at least three teacher training days per week to get up to the speed. While the experienced teachers should be able to manage with two days per week although it is an uphill task.

From the FCPS website:

Obtaining a Provisional (Special Education) License to Become a Special Educator After Successful Completion of the Required Special Education Foundation Courses

In order to obtain a provisional (Special Education) license to become a special educator, a candidate must:
FIRST, “…have completed at least three semester hours of coursework in the competencies of foundations for educating students with disabilities and have an understanding and application of the legal aspects and regulatory requirements associated with identification, education, and evaluation of students with disabilities. A survey course integrating these competencies would satisfy this requirement.”
SECOND, apply for applicable special education teaching positions.
THIRD, interview with a school principal and then be selected as a finalist for an applicable special education teacher position.
After employment is finalized and a teaching contract has been issued, the FCPS Office of Licensure will work with the new employee to get their provisional (Special Education) license issued by the VDOE.

It’s a PANDEMIC. The economy is garbage. We will be lucky if we don’t have to significantly cut teacher pay next yeR.

But this is surely in addition to a basic bachelors college degree, right? That is the most basic qualification.

Yes, and then you have a certain amount of time to finish the standardized testing and coursework (usually a masters) to obtain a standard license. I have a friend on this track, and she is definitely not someone who walked in off the street. She has a bachelors in early childhood education and worked as an IA in a special ed classroom for several years before being offered the provisional license position.
