Looking for DC MDs (not mohels) who perform circumcision as an outpatient procedure

Anonymous
Can anyone recommend DC area MDs who perform circumcision? We are planning one for our infant son and the only MD who appears to do this as an outpatient procedure that I can find is Dr. Marmon in Rockville. Are there any other DC area physicians who do them that folks can recommend?

And lest there are any questions/comments, this is not meant to be a post about the ethics or merits or downsides of circumcision. And yes, we realize we could have our OB do it at the hospital, but after seeing several friends get their sons recircumcised from OB circumcisions that didn’t go great, we do not want to go this route. And yes, we know we could use a mohel, but as largely non-observant Jews we do not want the pomp and circumstance of hosting a formal bris. Thank you.

Just an FYI, you can use a mohel and they can skip the religious prayers and stuff and just do the cutting for you. They won't be offended.

Hmm. I thought they didn’t like to do that...Are you sure the mohels who are Rabbis would really be ok with that? The most popular mohels seem to be Orthodox and Conservative rabbis and I have a hard time seeing that. Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve never heard of mohels skipping the ceremony.

Actually there are plenty of mohels who do non Jewish circumcisions. They are fine with skipping the religious part. I know families who have gone this route.

But I’m assuming these are the reform mohels, not the super popular ones like Henesch, right?

No, Conservative and Orthodox ones. Not sure why this is surprising. Nothing that prohibits them from doing it.

Right, I said we are Jewish. Are you basing this on lived experience and knowledge of real Jews in real life or just an Atlantic article you read? It’s one thing to hire a mohel as a non-Jew and to ask for no ceremony. Obviously it would not make sense. But we are non-practicing Jews. That will be perceived quite differently by an observant mohel.

Do your own research. Find a Pediatric Urologist.

OP, I think you can get a Mohel to do it without the entire Bris ceremony. Right now I don't know anyone who would advocate for a Bris during COVID anyway. I do not speak from experience as my son is older and we had a bris. But, I would absolutely not want to hold a gathering today. I would think that most Mohel's would be ok with just the act and not the ceremony right now. It is at least worth a call to ask. FWIW, we used Dr. Marmon and he was fabulous.

Maybe Dr Engel at Reiter Hill. I know he does brises and also at the hospital. Maybe he does it at the office too?

Uses mohel this is so common. You are making an issue out of something that’s not .

Dr. April Rubin— Dr. and mohel. She was fantastic and very sensitive to our desire for a more secular bris. Hilariously when we took my son to his 2 week check up, our pediatrician in Bethesda said everything looked great and asked if we had used Dr. Rubin 😂 so apparently she is known for doing good work. 🤷‍♀️

Lived experience, not an article. I only posted the article because it backed up what I had observed.
