Why the heck do Georgia schools start back the first week of August?

And when do they get out? I’m asking because of the picture being circulated of the Georgia high school with the crowded halls.

Lots of schools in the south go back around now and get out early May. My friend’s district in Mississippi was supposed to go back this week but delayed by a month- I guess to see how things go in other districts first!

I'm from the south and we always started in August. We couldn't understand why northern schools waited until after labor day...

Schools in the south all have AC, and most are back in session by mid-August, finishing around Memorial Day, give or take a week or two. I grew up in Ohio and school started the second week in August and ended the first week in June.

Yeah lots of places start the week before Labor Day, but the first week of August? That’s still summer!

You should be asking why are Georgia schools opening at all.

Lots of school systems moved up their calendars over the past 20 years because of the testing requirements with NCLB. It gives them a few more weeks of instruction before testing.

Not all schools have a/c. I cannot imagine starting school in early August here in MD with no a/c. My school doesn’t have it and the beginning of the year and end of the year can be brutal.

They get an extra to get through the AP curriculum, while our kids are squashing it into a shorter time period, and doing nothing for a month after the exams.

And conversely, August in the south is pretty miserable so why not go back to school? Then they can actually enjoy the month of May before it gets crazy hot.

Many schools in the Midwest start early August too. We have always had to schedule summer trips with family before August because nephews had to get back to school.

Schools in Arizona usually start at the end of a July.

I grew up in the rural South. 30 years ago, MS had AC. My HS did not. Started 2nd week of August. It was brutal. But even at 100+ degrees outside, we never had a heat cancellation. I fainted in class once. They had me go (unescorted) to see the clinic aid, then sent me back to class. Even today, the Rural South is just a different place.

The upside of 2nd week of August start was out by Memorial Day. Would not want to start school next week. But, I have always hated having my kids in school until mid June, when it’s nice outside after a long winter and everyone wants a break. Now that my kids are older, once APs are done, no one has much motivation. It also aligned the Hs and college calendars more closely, which can be nice for families with older kids. So, it can actually be a nice schedule. I wouldn’t mind a switch.

From Florida we always went back around the second week of August. Maybe it’s because our weather is always nice. It’s always summer like. We can still go to the beach and enjoy warm weather and warm water in October. Summer means less when it’s always nice.
