Why the heck do Georgia schools start back the first week of August?

From Alabama and we have gone back at this time for at least 25 years when I was in school. We also get out early May.

Yeah lots of places start the week before Labor Day, but the first week of August? That’s still summer!

Have you ever lived in the deep South? It's horrible in August, might as well go to school.in the air conditioning. It's much more pleasantly summer like in late April / early May. That's the time you want off..

August = summer
Summer does not equal school

Not all schools have a/c. I cannot imagine starting school in early August here in MD with no a/c. My school doesn’t have it and the beginning of the year and end of the year can be brutal.

This is why I think the schedules happened. Down south where its always warm year-round so it's more flexible when its open/closed. Up north, buildings for schools don't have AC so they need to be out of session during the hottest months of July and August.

Down south August = disgusting humidity and heat so no one is outside enjoying anything

Schools get more time before AP exams, and other state tests. School is over right after testing is done. Up here kids do NOTHING in late May or June in school.

I like the southern school schedule way more than the northeast one. And the DC one that has a million interruptions and goes through most of June. June is a lovely month to have off to vacation.

From Florida we always went back around the second week of August. Maybe it’s because our weather is always nice. It’s always summer like. We can still go to the beach and enjoy warm weather and warm water in October. Summer means less when it’s always nice.

Florida weather isn't nice 90% of the time

That's preposterous. I'd rather live in Seattle. Or Anchorage.

My sister's kids in Colorado start next week, and my brother's kids in Florida tradtionally start mid-August. That's why I chuckle when I see my school system's parents up in arms screaming about a mid-August start date for the next school year. As if it's some abomination.

In some parts of the country, the weather in June is much nicer than the weather in August. No one there is complaining about being out of school for the entire month of June and then going back in early August.

It's also a better schedule for taking AP exams, since they get an extra month of schooling before the exams and very little dead time after.

My kids' school that starts in early August has a 1 week break in mid October. It's a great time for a mini vacation!

Yeah I have cousins and her children start in mid-august and get out at the end of May. She told me it's just as weird that we don't start until after labor day we're right before labor day and then go until mid-june.

I grew up in Louisiana. We always went back in early August, got a full week for Thanksgiving and Mardi Gras, and were done in mid-May. Loved it- wish it was that way here!

I lived in New Orleans for awhile. Love the school schedule- including that full week for Thanksgiving.

Schools always start early in the south because of football.
