| Is that still happening? |
|
I dunno. I did listen to the feasibility study call that DCPS held. The construction company concluded that both the old Banneker building and Garnett-Patterson are feasible sites. Which one is better depends on your preferences, I guess.
Whether the city will follow through, especially with the current budget problems, is a different question. |
| I would not rule it out, after this nutty pandemic time passes. Eventually Cardozo will outgrow its space, in like 15 year maybe. |
| They are still looking at both sites. Each site has different variations. Depends on you which site you think is better. The variations are minor (library in the front or the back). Personally I like the proximity of Garnett-Patterson. Seeing that all of the feeder schools are south of U Street and therefore withing walking distance of less than a mile, it makes more sense for it to be on U Street rather than up Georgia Avenue. Both schools when renovated will be fabulous. |
| But, with all that is going on budget wise, they are still making another middle school? When is it expected to open? I'm sure that this is just to appease white parents who live in the area and don't want to send their kids to Cardoza or Macfarland or Lincoln. All of that talk about neighborhood schools. Why not try to fix the current middle schools? |
Because Cardozo middle/high combo is going to outgrow its building in 10 years or so. There is not a lot of space in nearby middle schools as they are mostly on growth trajectories as well. So they need to be thinking about it now in order to have a building ready when it is needed. If they did "fix" Cardozo middle school in its current location, that would attract more students and hasten the need for more space. |
| PP obviously does not know anything about the situation. I live in the area with two ES kids. Yes, I'm white, but the majority of students at theses schools are not white. Currently SWW@FS and Cardozo MS at the Cardozo EC are the two possibilities. SWW@FS is overcrowded and Cardozo MS is the worst performing MS in DCPS. It has been around for about 7 or 8 years. Fixing something that broken is impossible. You can send your child there, not me. Time to shut it down. Feeder students don't even attend Cardozo MS, it's that bad. The students from SWW@FS, Ross ES, Garrison ES, Thomson ES, and Cleveland ES all deserve better and a new MS is the right decision. |
Also Howard Middle School charter is on a PIP and likely to be shut down. That may increase Cardozo's enrollment. |
| From my understanding, Lincoln is also an option for at least some of those schools and Macfarland for the dual language students. The people that I heard talking about building a shaw middle school said that Cardoza middle should be shut down. So, if a growth trajectory is bring considered, then why shut it down? Also, I was here long enough to see Shaw promised to the majority black residents. Only after the majority white parents came and raised a fuss, was there any serious talk about making a new Shaw middle school. And no, I absolutely would not send my kids to Cardoza. However, some of the very same parents who tried to get us to come and rally for the Shaw middle school also tried to sell us Cardoza as an option in the meantime. But, Cardoza isn't good enough for them? |
It's CardozO. Not CardozA. The idea is to move the middle school from the building it shares with Cardozo High School, and put it in a new building. That way both middle and high schools will have adequate space. Yes, some people are trying to rally local parents to Cardozo, but in the long run more room is needed. All kids deserve enough space regardless of their background or academic performance. |
| They could also make Seaton K-8 since that modernization is already in the plan. |
Would not be enough room in the long run still. |
+1. Room is needed for all of Seaton and Garrison and much of Cleveland's graduating classes, plus there are a kids living in the boundary who may wish to come IB for middle school even if they don't attend a feeder. And it would have to be a big enough space to also fit the program at Cardozo Middle which is for very recent immigrants who are beginning to learn English. There's just no way all of that could fit onto Seaton's lot. |
What is a PIP? I have heard for years that Howard is likely to be shur down. It seems to be rumning strong. |
Performance improvement plan. Their charter was reviewed this winter and some conditions were attached. The board will probably pass them along if they continue not being totally crappy, but that is what happened this winter. No way is it running strong, their test scores suck. |
