When to stop using “first flow” nipple on baby bottle ?

Anonymous
My 14 week old is about to start at daycare. We have been using the Avent “0” (“first flow”) nipple on her bottles at the advice of an LC - helps to maintain breastfeeding if their bottles are low flow apparently.

Should she keep using these very low flow nipples or switch to a “1” or “2” flow?

I never switched and stayed with 0 for both my kids untile I weaned around 1 and they switched to cows milk from a sippy. It was better for our breastfeeding anyway. You can try going to 1 and see if she likes it.

For first kid, switched around 5 months. For second, never switched.

You don't need to switch if baby is drinking well and not falling asleep during feedings.

If baby suddenly starts to reject the bottle or takes extremely long to finish, consider switching to a faster flow.

Every baby is different. Our DD seemed to like the Dr. Browns Preemie and Size 1 nipples the same, then started to get frustrated with these and we moved to Size 2 around 5-6 months. We assumed at some point she'd switch to size 3 but she never did before we phased out bottles around 13 months. I nursed until 15 months.

OP here, thanks PPs! Daycare uses size 2 nipples unless you provide your own. I’m going to send the zero flow nipples with her since she seems to like them just fine.

+1 to this.

We used the size 0 until one day, baby started refusing the bottle. Sized up, he would take it, but wasn't happy about it. Sized up again (to size 2) and now he's guzzling his bottles happily, and still nursing as well without a problem.
