| Does anyone know -- is DCPS offering Chromebooks for all families that request one for fall DL? And if yes, will each child get one or just one per family? |
|
Allegedly yes they will but I don’t have a ton of faith that it will be rolled out well, on time, and that there will be enough. I went ahead and bought my kids devices.
Did you complete the technology survey? |
| DCPS does not support Chromebooks. If you have one the software will likely work, but that is not what they will likely be providing. |
What does this mean? Aren't schools going to be using Canvas, which is compatible with Chromebook? |
| They say "Preferred devices run either Windows 10 or iOS." Meaning not chromebooks. But I've heard from some people that chromebooks work fine too. |
It means DCPS will not provide tech support for them, and will not worry about choosing programs that are compatible with them. You are welcome to purchase one on your own, but it’s almost certainly not what DCPS will be providing to families. And if something isn’t compatible, DCPS won’t care. I have never used a chromebook so I have no idea what is and is not compatible. |
| It’s the Microsoft surface go. Or at least that’s what I was told |
My students have been receiving chrome books with a stylus and I have had a family receive two for each of their children. |
Are they DCPS-tagged items? My school gave out Chromebooks that teachers had gotten donated but were not purchased by DCPS and no support was provided by DCPS/OCTO. |
| I hope so, OP. We filled out the tech survey and requested a device, but have heard nothing (in fact, we've heard nothing at all from our child's school all summer except confirmation of enrollment). Our kid is in PK3, so we figure worst case scenario is that we don't get the device and either have to scramble to find one ourselves or we just don't do DL (since our grade isn't mandatory). For us, the bigger concern is childcare (not academics) so we're focusing on sorting that out and just figure that any actual education our child gets this year will be a bonus. |
| We had a mix up on who was filling out the survey in our household, and it never got done. Does that mean we won't get one? I assumed that was just to get a sense for how many devices they needed? We're going to need something... I guess if we have to pay out of pocket for it we will. |
| I have posted this in a few threads but my concern is the word "need" in the phrase "all who need one." Do they take my word for it? Do only certain schools / grades get them? Is it one per student, as it should be? How far in advance of school will we get them so the kids can get set up and logged in? Dubious. |
Is the survey closed? I was receiving reminders for what seemed like a month. They are asking for named children, their school, their DCPS ID number, grade, etc. I think you need to fill out the survey or otherwise contact your school to let them know what you need. they are not mind readers. I filled out the survey for each of my children. We are lucky in that we do not need a device but I understood the process was to make sure they knew what everyone had and plan to get devices to those families that indicate they need it. |
| I recommend filling out the survey and then contacting your school if you are in need of a device. The school might have a computer already available. DCPS/OCTO are less likely to troubleshoot computer issues that are not on a DCPS computer. |
