Any tricks or strategies for negotiating on a certified pre-used car sold by a reputable dealership? Never bought one before (always bought new). Car is a couple years old. Is it common to negotiate on an used car price?
Current asking price is 21500. Since I'll have to pay tax and etc cetera charges on top I was thinking of asking the dealership to cut 1k from the price. Worth it or will they laugh? |

Depends on the car TBH.
They are also going to tack on processing fee of around $700. Some cars you can negotiate easier than others. Also sometimes you can get a better deal on a car the dealership doesn’t normally sell. Like a Dodge from a Honda dealer etc |

Never ask for price off the car. They will tack it on elsewhere. Always negotiate the OTD price. Ask them what the current OTD (out the door price) is. Ask for a quote that lays out all the fine details car price, dealer fees, document fees, tax, tags, etc. make sure each of these are clearly labeled and defined. After you get your OTD price, negotiate on that price. They say their OTD price right now on that $21500 comes to $23500 for example. You can then negotiate on that price and say my OTD price is $20959. Or whatever you are comfortable with.
Also make sure you get preapproval for your auto loan. Call your bank (or whoever you want to finance through) and ask for a interest rate for $23000. Then, when you tell the auto dealership that you are already approved @ 2.9%, for example, they will probably come back and say, if you finance with us we will do it for 2.3%. Let them beat what you already secured, but make sure your OTD price remains the agreed up price before deciding to finance with them. |
| We have been burnt by the add-ons twice. Definitely agree with the OTD price strategy. |
| We recently bought on with only a $100 processing fee thru a broker. Highly recommend going thru a broker. |
You think the broker works for free? |
