| Where are they getting the background noise for this game? Am I wrong that there are a bunch of cardboard cut outs in the stands??? |
| Yep it’s cardboard and they’re piping in the sounds. I believe MLB sent all the digital sound files to all the teams. |
| Yep, have seen/heard this on most, if not all games. |
LOL are the players hearing that or just viewers? |
It is through the sound system of the stadium. They are trying to mimic real crowd noise. |
| I think it's pretty cool and much better than an empty stadium. |
Yes and... It is over the PA in the stadium, but the audio engineers are also augmenting it for the telecasts. Much of the thinking for this was developed from sports video games. https://frntofficesport.com/espn-mlb-fox-virtual-fans-artificial-crowd-noise-opening-night-turner-sports-baseball/ |

They have something similar for the NBA, except the crowd images are a little better than the cutouts because they are projecting them on digital screens. They also have recorded halftime entertainment like the laker girls and recorded national anthems from local groups. The "home teams' send in the files I think.
The cutouts vary from stadium to stadium. Red Sox just have them behind the green monster but I think Dodger stadium has more of them. |
| And the players are holograms. You don't really think they're out there playing, do you? |
|
Everything is surreal. No one responded to my post about this from earlier this week, but

| wft indeed |
| Any empty stadium will harken back to every apocalyptic movie you’ve ever seen and they want to avoid that. |
Wft - why f-ing try |
| The sounds are from video games. I’m just happy to watch any sport on tv. |

Wow. Is this really our new life?
It’s great they’re finding workarounds. I hope the players and staff can keep reasonably safe. |
