Could you link to that Twitter, so that we can understand how to bring our kids there? |
I try to avoid the vitriol on this site and recognize these a complex issues. There are some kids, however, who will never recover from being out of school this long. Having worked in education for fifteen years, there is a small window to keep those kids engaged and motivated. Many will drop out at some point due to learning loss during the pandemic. Our society may not care or may still decide this shutdown of schools is worth that price but it is a price that will be paid. |

Now go register your kid and get them IPL |
This makes particular sense for the Cap Hill crowd: "Any student transfers for the current school year may complete a mid-year application by calling the My School DC Hotline at (202) 888-6336 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday." |
that says you can register them - not that they would be guaranteed an IPL spot. |
(also - I don’t really think twitter handle “Learning Loss Isn’t a Thing” is a great source.) |
Maybe if I lived in Capitol Hill, but I don’t have time to spend 2-3 hours in the car for a couple of hours of IPL (assuming two round trips a day). I used to drive my kid to a school just east of Rock Creek, and that was 35 min in rush hour, so don’t tell me I can get EOTR in 20 min. |
Sorry, meant to say from Ward 3. |
I suppose it’s too hard to call and ask |
No, I’m not going to enroll my kid in a poorly performing school I have no connection or relationship with that is an hour away from me on public transit. Those twitter idiots who think this is some kind of gotcha are just making themselves look stupid. |
It is very hard to ignore vitriol in this day and age. There is so much violence and misdirected anger about a system that has always been fundamentally broken for certain communities. I have been in education for 15 years and worked all over this city. I believe that children with good support and intervention will bounce back for a year of instability. This does still not address the immense gaps in achievement that exists. Fundamentally, the problem that I have with this site, is that it is so grounded in individualism at the expense of others. No progress will ever be made that way. |
See, you couldn’t leave off that last paragraph? |
This is not the clever argument you think it is. |
(also - school social worker making negative twitter posts against certain races? not a good look for you.) |
