WHY aren't our children being educated on Mondays?

Anonymous
That's why a lot of people chose DL to begin with-among people I know. It wasn't b/c they didn't want their kids in person or because they thought virtual was so great. They didn't like the original hybrid plan with three days of no school every week and thought DL would be more time with the teacher teaching.

APS - 100% asynchronous on Mondays. No teacher interaction

YUP. Agree. When you break it down, I wonder how much actual instruction our kids have received. I would bet it's about 25% of a normal school year.

Same here. The synchronous hours on the other 4 days are really short too. We could use a lot more small group instruction on math, reading, and writing.

Except for the schools that do office hours, reading groups, sectionals, PE, etc on Mondays.

Some of the elementary schools have a STEM special.

I don't understand why this isn't uniform across elementary schools in the SAME school system. That's BS. Everyone should get a STEM special, a foreign language special, and have a full time AART. Its ridiculous.

Is VA one giant school system?

If they raise taxes, all is possible.

We have the resources to have amazing schools in VA. It’s shocking that our communities don’t prioritize schools as they do in other areas of the country.

PP is talking about discrepancies among ES in FCPS. The same school system. The school across the street might have STEM, Spanish and an AART who sees the kids every month and does pullouts. Your school might have none of those things b/c the principal would rather 'buy' instructional coaches or whatever.

Yes, the principals can decide some of these things. This is where the PTA should get more involved.

Why? So they can double or triple the amount of worthless staff at Gatehouse?

Our school has STEAM, and for lower grades, a Healthy Habits class. Laurel Ridge.

this is why the parents in the school board need to get more involved in the budget process. The superintendent reads off all the changes and the school board just OKs it.

It is a SHAM that districts do not actually give first year teachers materials and resources so they can teach without having to do this. Why do so many first year teachers suck? Because they are given nothing and expected to work 80 hour weeks to figure it out. I don’t do free labor anymore. I’m an excellent teacher but schools will take and take and take and manipulate you into thinking it’s “for the kids.” Nope.

The irony is many of these teacher critics are likely federal workers who are notorious clock watchers that won't lift a finger outside of regular hours.

Um, wait, so you are criticizing people for stereotyping teachers, but doing so by stereotyping Federal workers? Ok. I am a DOJ litigator, and I'm pretty certain I put in as many hours as my sister, who is a teacher. I'm not saying she is lazy, she works very hard, but her hours are nothing like mine,

As far as the steam/ foreign language special issue...
I was told that a few years ago schools had to choose a foreign language (fles program) or steam (science/tech/etc)
The school I teach at has steam, so we don’t have fles.
Other positions that are “special” are based on the way a principal spends money (and sometimes wastes money on coaches.)
