I know but it might spur the kid to now offer to replace it or at least open a conversation making it easier for OP's kid to say, "A new one is going to be a thousand bucks and I don't have that kind of money." Remember, the spiller thinks Op's kid is taking it home for repairs and likely thinks those are not that expensive.
